Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. Freshness date on the side of the label. Not diggin' the new "IPA" shouting label ...

Appearance: Deep golden beer, touch of haze (goes away as the beer warms), crowned with a quickly settling, tight, creamy white lace with tentacles that cling to the glass.

Smell: Floral, perfume/estery, dry Bazooka bubble-gum. Mild, real mild, diacetyl in the background.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy, light-bodied. Big grain tannin character that lends a cracked grain, earth, dry, husky flavour and feel on the palate. This is a very dry beer. A bit "dirty" in character.

Malt sweetness is quite low, although a bready pale malt flavour and malt body shows through as the beer warms up, along with a dab of buttery diacetyl. Hop flavour has hints of citric rind, salt and a mineral edge as it snaps at the palate. Bitter overall. Fruity esters and more soft bubble-gum-like flavours. Odd "eggy" sulfur flavour and "cheesey" hop flavour thrown in the middle. Dry grain tannins in the finish with a leafy hop note and touch of hop oil on the tongue -- finish is very unpleasant, seems like it'll never go way.

Notes & Drinkability: This is a tannin ridden beer, unbalanced, astringent, hard to swallow more than one and needs some cleaning up in my opinion. It's a dirty beer. On the right highway for the style, but took the wrong exit.

On tap at Redbones BBQ

Creamy looking white lace and perfect clarity. Clean and crisp palate, nice uniform maltiness. Hops are clean and sharp with a woody earthy bite. Touch of buttery diacetyl towards the end which finishes mostly dry. Went very well with the catfish fingers.

poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a hazy, gold with some flakes in it (probably because I cellared it too long). Impressive, creamy, off-white tan head that is somewhat cone shaped. Head stays intact all the way down the glass. Leaves behind concentric rings of lacing and large splotches near the bottom.

S - Citrus hops and some crackers upon opening the bottle. In the glass orange zest, red apple, and light spices come out.

T - Malt with hints of apple upfront. The body is a apple cider with orange and spice on a slightly stale malt backbone. Strong sense of red apple as the beer passes over the back of the tongue leads to a very dry, overripe red apple finish.

M - Medium bodied with a slight chewyness that lingers on the palate even after swallowing. Moderate carbonation suits the beer nicely.

I was non to pleased with this beer considering all the hype it has received. The stale red apple finish is really just ruins the beer and makes me not want to take another sip. Part of the issue may very well be that this beer is 2 years beyond its best if enjoyed by date. I'll give a fresher bottle a go in the near future. However, after looking at other reviews, it seems my assessment is inline with what other observed.

A- Poured into an Adnams Ghost Ship pint glass. Thick off white towards the darker side head. Good retention.

S- biscuit, malty, slight hop (Fuggles) but not very much compared to other American IPAs or indeed British IPA's.

T- More of a bitter malt taste than a hop kick. Still very tasty but it doesn't seem like an IPA.

M- Quite a thin feel, but it goes down very well. Session brew for sure.

I like this beer as a session brew, but I'm not sure it's a traditional IPA by British or American standards.

12 oz. bottle poured into a craft glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange with a half-inch white head that dissipates to film fairly quickly. Carbonation average, lacing heavy.

Aroma: Some inviting aromas here. Smells like apricot, citrus, pine, hops, oranges, lemon and some faint grassiness.

Taste: Really tasty IPA. Piny hops and citrus are the dominant flavors. Enough complexity to keep you interested. It's not a mondo hop bomb, but it doesn't need to be.

Mouthfeel: Some enjoyable prickliness to go with a light-to-medium body. Smooth for an IPA.

Overall: One of the better straight-up IPAs I've had. Would drink again. Hits all the right notes.
