12oz bottle in a pint glass.

A- Clear blood red color, thin head. Fat and spotty lacing. Lightly carbonated look.

S- Caramel malt aroma mostly. There's very little hop presence. Toasty, sweet.

T-Bready red ale, toasty. The flavor works, but not as an IPA. It's quite malty until the end, then there's some light hop flavor.

M- Sturdy malt body with light carbonation. A touch of hop bitterness in the lingering finish.

O- I like the beer's flavor, but I've had mild English IPAs with more hop bite than this. That's why my overall number is below the others.

Not a big Shipyard fan, but thought this might be worth a try.

In a pint glass the beer was a bright copper color with a thick off-white head. The head dissipated quickly, and left a lot of lace.

Hoppy aroma. Floral and grassy, some citrus. Sweet malt background.

The aroma didn't quite translate into the taste. Mostly a floral, perfumy taste. A tiny bit of grapefruit, and a little bit of sweet bread.

OK beer, a little bit better than average.

Pick up one of these as a local new beer to try.

Poured into my pilsner glass, not sure why i chose it but there you go. The beer is pale amber in color with a dense white head. As I move it around the head floats and remains.

The aroma is sweet spicy hops with hints of caramel malts. The aroma isn't over the top but very pleasant.

The taste is a a classic english style ipa. The flavor is an initial burst of earthy hops. The hops remain and there is a spicy flavor that pokes in as the beer finishes. The end is bitter but is smooth. Not my favorite ipa but a good example of the style.

12 ounce bottle, "best enjoyed before" dating notched onto the side of the label.

Pour is clear and lighter amber, under a moderate eggshell head. leaves fine strands of lace on the glass.

Bready nose, I also pick up some nutty notes, tea and some herbal hoppy notes, quite the complex nose!

On the palate, its more tea, more herbal notes, some mint. Also a hint of soap and some vegatal slightly off putting notes.

Ehh, some thing definatly seems off here. With so many quality IPA's out there I doubt I'd go for this one again.

Monkey Fist IPA opens to a bright, citrusy, hoppy nose, full of pink grapefruit, grapefruit rind, and lemon oil, with lesser bits of dandelion stem, grass, mint, and eucalyptus in the background. Good levels of brown and confectioner’s sugar add sweetness to combat the bitter hops, and fruit esters bring in touches of orange, berry, and apricot. There’s also a light toast crust and cracker backing, somewhat helping to earth the beer. As a whole, the nose is heavily geared toward hops, which are present in a good variety and potency, showcasing a good selection. But as a whole, the beer seems fairly tame, edging out slightly in the hops, but not necessarily distinguishing itself from the field, and the sugars could have used a boost, especially in the fruit esters.

On the tongue, the beer is immediately hoppy, with pine resin, grapefruit rind, dandelion stem, lemon oil, mint, anise, and eucalyptus first and foremost, the flavors here much more bitter than they seemed on the nose. Brown sugar helps bring the bitterness into perspective, joined by small touches of orange, berry, and apricot fruit esters. Toast crust, cracker, and Grape Nuts cereal notes from the grains add more earthiness. Towards the end of the mouthful, as the sugars die off, the taste is largely hops, coming across as tart and, because of the lack of other notes, simultaneously watery. The aftertaste is a continuation of this hop-only note, the sugars and most of the grains having completely died off. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, there are good hop flavors in here, and especially for fans of the more bitter side of hops, there’s much in here to enjoy. The beer as a whole, however, feels watery and weak, as if a truckload of hops had been added to a rather standard ale.
