Bottle #6522. Dark brown in color. Vanilla, dark chocolate, roasted malt, toasted barley, wisp of smoke, oak and a boozy sweetness. Underlying roasted grain malt profile. A tiny tinge of tartness. Holding up fairly well.

2014 Edition

Appearance - Pours deep, near black cola brown near black with a tan, half finger head that dissipates quickly to reveal a mostly barren surface. No lacing.

Smell - Funky aroma. Strong tartness, with lesser toffee, caramel and faint chocolate.

Taste - Follows the nose. Some tartness that hits on cherry, with lesser notes of toffee and caramel. A touch of chocolate and some oaky character hits mid-taste and rides into the finish that is still dominated by the lingering tartness.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Goes down easy enough with a slightly dry finish.

Overall - Not a bad beer overall, but a Barrel-aged Double Scottish? Not so much. Tastes more like a Flanders Oud Bruin more than anything, and would probably rate highly if this were there intent. Unfortunately it wasn't. I don't even really taste much BA influence outside a bit of oak.

750 ml bottle into snifter; 2015 vintage bottling, bottle #01428. Pours very dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, molasses, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, nuttiness, chocolate, leather, tobacco, light peat smoke/char, herbal, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, molasses, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, nuttiness, chocolate, leather, tobacco, light peat smoke/char, herbal, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, raisin, plum, fig, licorice, molasses, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, nuttiness, chocolate, leather, tobacco, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from roast bitterness/oak spiciness as well. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a very nice barrel aged wee heavy style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and moderate fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Black colored beer with a tint brown colored head.

Smells strongly of whiskey and malt with apple skins. Vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, toffee, raisin, plum, rum, and apple. This quite the aromatic ale! Smoke is in here, but I wouldn't say it has a scotch smell.

Starts out malty and salty. Mildly bitter with the flavor of tobacco and fruit. Smoky malt. Sour note to this too. Doesn't taste much like it smells.

Mouthfeel is good.

Smells great but tastes just OK.

A nice-looking beer with a decent aroma. The taste nowhere lived up to what the aroma implied.

Good looking beer with a fine nose. Complete lack of bourbon or much of anything else in the taste. Without question the worst bourbon barrel aged beer I've ever had. Big disappointment.
