The roasted malts used to brew this beer give it a deep cola brown hue. The edges are the only place light gets through. The head is absolutely massive on this. It's billowing and fluffy; reminiscent of meringue in both look and texture. Messy strings of lace stick to the glass as the head slowly dissipates.

Dark chocolate and cocoa powder blend harmoniously with the hop character made up of fresh pine and a grapefruit twang. Some rich fudge notes reveal themselves as the beer warms. The aroma isn't in your face but it's very intriguing and you know right away what style it is.

It's piney and a bit resinous at first. Its fresh quality is furthered by suggestions of mint. This green, lively hop character carries on throughout. Its bitterness trumps the malt character but there's still ample bakers chocolate and a fudge-like richness. A flash of citrus peel in the middle makes me think of a Terry's chocolate orange, but only for a second. We're left with a green, leafy bitterness in the finish that dries things out a bit.

The body is chewy and rich without being too heavy and filling. It's got a perfect weight to support the flavours within and still remains highly drinkable.

This has to be one of my favorite black IPA's to date. These days I find myself gravitating more towards the cleaner side of IPA's. Sure it's packed with flavor and has plenty of complexity but its bitterness doesn't slow you down from taking the next sip. What a brew!

A: Black, very well carbonated (three inches of head), nice lacing
S: Slightly citrusy hops, caramel/toffee malts, slight chocolate malt aroma, slight alcohol
T: Bitter hops (almost pungent - and I don't mean that in a bad way), once the bitterness settled in, you get nice citrusy hop flavours, followed by slight chocolate malt in the background, finish is quite dry
M: Medium-light body, very well-carbonated, nice bitter and dry finish
O: Nice tasting beer, not nearly as heavy as some of the other BIPA I've had but big on flavour, starts with the nice bitter hops, get some of the citrusy flavours from the hops once the palate adjusts to the bitterness, and it finishes with some subtle chocolate malt tones - great example of the style
