Big anise and roast aroma. Thick rich pour and appearance, lacy. A big beer.Dry Coffee powder, smoke, ash, its beyond roast. some chocolate, black licorice, mint, and hoppy beyond that. Smooth mouthfeel, oily feel,No booze apparent. Johnsense bottle from trade.

Received in the CANBIF 2013. Thanks Caudalie!!

Appearance. Pours thick and black with a thin espresso foam head.

Smell. Semi-sweet chocolate and some dark roasted malts, maybe a little bit smokey, and a touch of dark fruits. Yep, smells like your classic RIS alright.

Taste. Dark roasted and smokey malts, some quality dark chocolate, and again, just a touch of dark fruits in a yeasty sort of way. Good stuff here.

Mouthfeel. Pretty full body, medium-low carbonation.

Overall. A very well made RIS with some nice smokey malts going on. Enjoyed it and would probably be a go-to for the style if it was available in BC.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size dark dirty brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry coffee notes is dominating with some black chocolate notes also dominating. Taste is a mix between some bitter roasted malt notes with quite a bit of black chocolate notes with some dry and almost astringent coffee notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. A lot dryer then I was expecting with quite a bit of dry coffee notes which dominates other flavours. Maple syrup notes I could not find.

Beer is black. A vigorous pour finally results in a thin tan head that dissipates quickly.

Roasted malt in the nose, alcohol, coffee, smoke.

Taste is similar to the nose. Roasted malt, coffee, smoke. The maple syrup is present and provides a sweetness that balances the general bitterness of the base beer. Pretty good.

Full bodied, low carbonation. Heavy.

Overall, pretty good. Not my favourite RIS but a nice offering.

Bottle from papat444. Served in a Darkness snifter.

A - A late-forming dark tan foam settles to a mottled cap, thick collar, and some intricate sheets of lacing. Body is a near-black with visible bubbles adhering to the sides of the glass.

S - Aroma is quite nice, with a hefty dose of baker's chocolate, caramel, dark breads, roasted grains, and a touch of smoke. I wouldn't necessarily of picked out the maple syrup, but there's a nebulous sweetness that fits. Not much obvious alcohol, although I think this bottle is about 9 months old.

T - The flavor, on the other hand, reveals the full force of the listed 83 IBUs. Quite bitter, with a mix of roast, dark chocolate, espresso, char, and earthy hop before giving way to a light maple aftertaste. A bit too burnt and acrid for my tastes, with very little of the sweetness found in the aroma, although balance improves as the beer warms up. If you like Scandinavian takes on this style may will be up your alley; the maple is too little, too late for me. Again, minimal alcohol presence.

M - Full bodied, chewy and sticky, with lingering sugars coating the lips and mouth. Carbonation is moderate, but unobtrusive and helps keep things from getting too heavy. Not a ton of alcohol warmth, but feels more substantial than 8.5%.

D - Reminds me a little of Ten FIDY, but with a bit less balance flavor-wise. Definitely a sipper with its heavy bitterness, but one of the more successful Imperial Stouts I've had from Quebec. I'm spoiled by the options available locally, but there'd be no shame in having this as your local Winter seasonal. Would drink again if priced appropriately.
