Big foam-up in the glass. Very gradually settles down to a tall coarse head. Near black color with a brown edge. Smell of a wet basement with some fermenting fruit.

Rather thin bodied. What flavor there is fades to a dry finish with more than a hint of acidity. I don't know how this could have been an award winner, but apparently they got a good version of this. Out of the can, the bacteria are the only winners. A hint of malt and plenty of burnt barley. An odd and unpleasant bitterish aftertaste. More like dishwater, that soapy bitterness. If this had some malt and sugar in it, apparently it got eaten after being canned.

I would certainly avoid this unless it's clear you have a newer batch. From the 16 oz can just bought in Denver in November.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small creamy brown head that quickly goes to a thin collar that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet perfumey chocolate malts with a little plasticky bitter roast.

The flavor is sweet perfumey chocolate malts with a bitter roast finish. It has a weird plasticky aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, this was not as good as when I've had it on draft. It seems that Crabtree can be a bit inconsistent. This bottle had too many off notes to my liking (plastic, char and perfume).

A rather pedestrian dark beer with mostly blasé character. Body appears dark red, almost brown with a quickly disappearing head. A faint roasted grain aroma barely comes through. The taste comes across rather flimsily with unremarkable, rather weak roasted grain flavors; some bitterness. The mouthfeel at least does some justice to the oatmeal component of the beer; smooth and medium bodied, dry finish.

A pretty sad example of a stout. Flavor and aroma really lack any memorable substance. At least the mouthfeel comes close to the body of a stout. Weak and forgettable.

A - Deep dark brown, almost opaque. Has a thin yet foamy head with decent retention.

S - Fresh cut oats, some chocolate, sweet, not much roast here.

T - Sweetness carries through, almost like chocolate milk with some oatmeal. Hits the spot on a cold day.

M - If anything, it was a little thin for a stout, not enough substance to it for me.

O - Decent representation of the style, I would have liked more body and a more complex malt profile.

Poured almost jet black from 16oz can into a Pint glass, huge 4 fingered tan head erupted even with a careful pour and took forever to subside to finish the pour. The aroma held some roasted malt richness but also a citrus/metallic scent, a hint of smokey sweetness was also in the aroma. Tasted of bitter roasted coffee with a malty and slightly sweet finish, creamy feel at first that slipped into a thick aftertaste of bitter chocolate/coffee with a citrus like tartness. Overall it's not bad and really kind of grows on you as you continue to sip your way through, wouldn't mind tasting this again...got it in a mix 6 and consider it a good find for that reason as well.

Stumbled upon Crabtree Oatmeal Stout in pint cans at Goebel Liquor/Rob's World of Beer in Wichita, KS.

I immediately found that this beer was over-carbonated. As I delicately poured, 3 inches of beer into a pint glass yielded 4 inches of rocky mocha head. The color is just shy of black and you get those red/cola highlights at the narrowest part of the glass. The massive rocky head leaves massive rocky lace. So after 20 mins of pouring and waiting I got to taste it.

Aromas are milder than expected, but it's still roasted barley, chocolate/cocoa beans, and a bit of pipe smoke.

Falvors are not pronounced but are the expected sweet dark chocolate malt, mild coffee, dark bread dough, and vanilla at the finish. There is an astringency that really detracts from the overall flavor profile. I don't care for stouts to have a sour/puckering trait. Without that astringent character it would get another point.

Pretty thin for a stout. I call it medium bodied at best. Not silky smooth either due to the mountain of carbonation. It's just all wrong in this area. Too much filtering???

Kind of a let down as I love thick sticky black brews and I love cans. The best thing you can do is to let this thing warm up and swirl most of the carbonation out of it before drinking. I'll save one of the four cans and give the other two away.

A shout out to woodychandler, whose big box of beers included this one. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts, coffee. Taste is mild, smoke, roasted malts, a touch of hops. Oats seem to be missing from both the smell and taste. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

16 oz can poured into snifter. No bottling info.

Pours a very-dark-brown-but-not-quite-black. Maybe a finger of head that fades rapidly. Only a ring around the edge of the glass is left. Pretty standard stout-y look.

Smells of roast barley, oatmeal, a bit of coffee. Enticing, but again, standard.

Roasty and just a bit bitter at first, with coffee and chocolate being the two main side tastes. Finishes with a nice amount of sweetness and a smooth feel.

The oatmeal makes it quite smooth, almost slippery in small sips. A larger mouth portion reveals a bit of astringency. Carbonation is a bit on the high end. I bet this would be amazing on nitro.

Yeah, this is a tasty oatmeal stout, but it doesn't stand out in any particular way.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

The beer is a deep, rich coffee color black. A dark tan head sits atop which dissipates to a wisp of tan bubbles with a cream ring around the sides. Nice rings of light lacing.

Smells of vanilla, slight bitter chocolates and roasted malts.

The taste is not bad at all. There are hints of bitter chocolates, nice roasted malts and a hint of oats as it finishes. Faint vanilla as well.

Mouthfeel is slightly watery.

Overall, a decent representation of the style, you'll like it if you enjoy easy drinking stouts.

THIS is the last of Blargimus' original shipment and part of the reason for the delay is that no picture heretofore existed and I CANnot brook the idea of submitting a photo of a Cracked CAN. The skids were greased by Bro. Jason's lightning-fast approval of the pic and I am about ready for a beer.

From the CAN: "Winner of the 2011 GABF Silver Medal for the Oatmeal Stout category."; "A stick-to-your-ribs full bodied stout with a roasty finish. Brewed with flaked oats, giving it a velvety smooth feel, with chocolate notes and a touch of sweetness."; "Partnered with MOBILECANNING".

Good Crack, Good Glug, lots of initial dense mocha-brown head with moderate retention, causing me to have to back off on the Glug momentarily. The head retention was not great, which was actually a good thing, since there was a lot of it and I was getting thirstier by the moment. Once everything finally settled down, my glass was filled with a dark, brown beer with cola highlights at the edges, but other than that, there was no light penetration. The nose reminded me of bittersweet chocolate - kind of roasty, somewhat bitter and with a chocolaty undertone. Mouthfeel was somewhat thin, given their glowing description, and the taste was of bittersweet chocolate, but nothing really earth-shattering. Finish was pleasantly bitter, but I just could not help but feel as though I were missing something. Oh well.
