Stopped by J.R.s on my way to an O'so event. Like mentioned in previous reviews, this place is a great for someone who is just getting into craft beer. Many good and above average craft beers both available by the 6 pack and by singles. They keep some 12 oz. singles in the fridge, and a few rows of shelves at room temp.
I will definitely stop by on my way thru again, just to check out what they have, as it seems they get a limited supply of some highly sought after beers, but it doesn't get picked over that much. Nice little shop, and staff was friendly.

Visited this place after an O'so event. Found large coolers in the back and rows of beer at room temperature. It had decent selection but not earth moving and some limited releases, although not many.. Staff there seemed eager, almost overly eager to help. For the Stevens Point area this probably is the place to get craft beer, unless visiting one of the breweries... Might visit again if I'm in the area, but would be a better place for a local newbie especially looking to explore craft beer...

Visited JR after a tour of the Stevens Point brewery.
Nice place with a very good selection and service altogether. I was greeted upon entry and asked if I needed any help once again while browsing, but was otherwise left to poke around.
I found all of the Wisconsin brands I was looking for save one (for which I'll have to visit Milwaukee), and was fairly impressed with the selection of Midwest regional brands. Aside from the Craft and Micro brands there's a decent selection of beer of very stripe, including all the A-B/InBev brands, but by no means was MillerCoors lacking in presence ; )
I especially appreciated the mix and match cooler, through which I was able to put together a couple of mixed-sixers to bring back home and share with friends.
Nice place altogether -- I look forward to my next visit!

JR's used to be the goto beer store in Stevens Point but they've lost a lot of business...and to me, seem to have gone downhill a bit since the new Cellar 70 opened in town.
They have a pretty good selection of state brews, which is a good thing, but as previous posters have pointed out, they don't have the greatest selection of BA top 100 beers.
I was seeking my favorite Belgian Lambic at one point and they did not have it so I spoke with the owner to see if he could get some from his distributor. Surprisingly, he didn't even flinch and added my request to his list...next thing I knew, he had it on the shelves and in stock. He had it on the shelves for quite some time, but since it's a bit pricey I don't think he could afford to make it a normal offering. I definitely appreciated the effort he put into that and he made me a loyal customer just for that action. For selection alone...he got a 4.5 score from me. This would be a must stop liquor store if they could just get a little better selection of good top 100 brews.

This place just hired on a dude to resurrect the beer selection. Expect many great things to start filling the shelves. The new liqour super store in town has really hurt these cats, so they are going to attept to hit up the beer lovers of point. As well as the kegs of icehouse for the college kids. MAny imports, lots of local brews. Amazing build your own six pack section. The manager is also freinds with the central waters guys..so thats a good sign. Thier wine selection is pretty bad as well, it you are into that kind of thing.

I was just passing by Stevens Point, but given some of the nice reviews, had to stop.
Somewhat disappointing. Yes, most Wisconsin players are here, but other than New Glarus, which had almost all their line-up represented, most others had only one or two beers each. Few Sprecher, Tyranena, Capital, but no Central Waters, and from nearby states, just some Goose Island, expired Great Lakes, and a few others. Little to no imports.
Bottom-line, some interesting stuff, but nothing special.
Service I just gave an average since I did not really speak to anybody (could have used a N/A).

I was up from Texas visting the inlaws when I went to a local pub and asked where I could get some brews to take back home. I was pointed to JR's and I was glad I asked.
For a store in Stevens Point it had a huge selection of wine and beer. I was wanting to get a good selection to take back of things we can't get back home and I was not disapointed. There was a whole row of Wisconsin & Michigan craft brews. I found on a side shelf toward the back some Goose Island special releases that I've only read about and one cooler that had singles in it which was PERFECT to try a lot. To follow up to the other post there was "some" Belgian brews there but not many.
Great service behind the counter and was more than happy to answer any questions I had. I will be back there again if I'm ever up that way.
NOTE: Review scores are a little higher due to location. Still a great place though.

Discovered this place on a fluke, after browsing through the liquor department at a local grocery store. Not finding what I wanted there, I talked with a clerk at the service desk and she directed me to JR...and just my luck!
I didn't really expect much from the front of the store. It's in an older, nondescript builing with your typical macro neons in the window.
When I walked in, I found it to be larger than I expected and with a little better selection than expected. All the major Wisconsin players are represented as well as some regionals I don't even find in Appleton or Green Bay. A good example is the Great Lakes Brewing Company....so I just had to pick up another 6er of Edmund Fitzgerald.
Imports were well represented, Germans, Euros, etc, however Belgians were weak. This was explained to me by either the owner or the manager (I'm not sure who I was talking to). Apparently, it's a distribution problem and they are hoping to get it resolved soon. When asked about availability of certain beers, I was told "It's all a matter of what the distributor brings us".
At any rate, there seems to be a good enough selection for just about every taste. and lucky for me, there was a hidden gem that I've been looking for since last fall. It was a bit pricey but OH SO TASTEY (one of my favorites so far) and I'll be reviewing it soon.
