If you go to chair 5, ask for gretchen (the manager) and tell her that her brother sent you! ( she knows me as F.T.) Chair 5 is an alaskan landmark, and the most famous bar in girdwood. only 35 miles out of anchorage, but feels like 200 miles away. girdwood is a small hippie town in between the mountains of the alyeska ski resort and the turnagain arm of the cook inlet. incredible skiing/snowboarding. wonderful cuisine in town, including the seven glaciers over half way up the mountain accesible only by tram, with five star cuisine and bar. Chair 5 is down by the inlet in the woods. made out of logs, chair 5 is hoppin every night. occasional live music and totally free atmosphere. Good selection of beer including local taps and belgian brews and micros from around the country. The food is great, halibut tacos, bomb pizza and great burgers. The atmosphere is what really kicks ass at chair 5. Log cabin feel and old logger/hippie/ski bum/ ALASKAN! feel. Good food, good brew, and great atmosphere. you will not regret the drive. dont forget to ask for Gretchen!

This is the absolute BEST bar in all of Girdwood. the staff are all wonderful, and very tolerant. you don't ever go waiting very long for another drink at all ever. the selection isn't very vast, but what they do have is usually damn good, and a few taps are rotating so new flavors can find room to come in. now on to the food; As a North East native i've been on a search for the best wings in the state of Alaska, and thus far, this is where they live, hands down. Not a whole wing like you get back east, but the flavor is dead on proper. on top of the wings, they have amazing pizza, and do indeed have anchovies like all good pizza joints should, as well as some amazing gourmet offerings. they also do wonderful things with local sea food, for instance their best in state halibut tacos. well worth the jaunt down from Anchorage even if it's just to check this place out without any hitting of the slopes.

Chair 5 Restaurant. After checking their website I decided that it was indeed worthy of a beerfly review. But for a quick overview, they had more than 12 beers on tap (varieties of Alaskan, Full Sail, Fransikaner, Deschutes, SN, Big Sky, Glacier Brewhouse, Silver Gulch, Guinness, Flying Dog, Moose's Tooth and Pikes). Their bottle selection was really nothing worth mentioning, but they did have some bottled specialty ales such as Midnight Sun's Epluche Culotte and La Maitresse Du Moine, Chimay, Stone IPA and AB, and Spaten Optimator. The food menu seemed overwhelming at first. We noticed an extensive pizza menu, but decided to opt for their lunch specials. I had a bowl of the soup du jour, curry chicken. Tasty, but they put those cruncy chow mein noodles on top. It added a weirdness to it. I could've done without them. We also tried out the Meditteranean Crab Cakes. These were huge crab cakes, very thick. They came with two sauces; a lemon hollandaise and a orange ginger sauce. Both sauces were delicious, especially when mixed together. We ordered a Franz Hefe while waiting for our apps. Doh...forgot to say no lemon. Sure enough there it was was, a wedge of lemon perched atop the rim of my glass. Oh well, take it off and hope they didn't squeeze it into the beer. After a sip, I decided that they had not. Whew...for our entrees we decided on halibut tacos (excellent choice, highly recommended) and spicy chicken burrito with refried beans. The burrito was certainly spicy. I like the taco better. We ordred a Glacier IPA and an Alaskan Amber to go with the meal. Not the best pairings in the world, but they worked out.
Overall a nice bar area with plenty of seating and a separate, more formal dining area. Service was good, aside from the lemon in my Franziskaner Hefe. Food was decent and beer selection was better.
If you find yourself in Girdwood, this is a nice little find.
