Very dark yellow pour, even some earthy colors in it. Aroma was grassy, absent, not enough hop, much less fresh hop vibe.
Taste was malty, not hop forward, not fresh or vegetal. Not a good representation of style, under hopped, over malted.

Called rattlesnake dark ipa at one time (harvest hop festival in Yakima?). Dark gold pour, like a brown ale got spilled in an ipa. Not too appealing. Aroma was a mild grassy hop, something peculiar to it that wasn't hops, but I couldn't describe it to you.
Taste, kind of a malty ipa, especially for this neck of the woods, off yeast flavor, not chico for sure, doesn't seem to fit the American ipa designation. Closer to a brown or cream ale. Bland, lacking hops and maybe a little chocolate or malt that was too roasty.

On tap at Kimo's Richland, 3.26.10,14.5 OG, 62 IBU, 6.2 ABV.
One finger creamy white head, quick dissipation, minimal lacing. Deep clear gold body, no rising carbonation. The hops aren't very noticeable in the nose, caramel, bready malts. Some fruitiness in the nose but not much, becomes more fruity as it warms, faint hop finish. Mouthfeel is flat, dry for style, IBUs aren't noticeable. Drinkability lacing IPA character and hoppiness, though it does get more hoppy as it warms. A good approachable IPA for newbies, but not hophead worthy.

Good full amber color with one finger of head. Nice floral hop aroma. Taste is full and flavorful hops that are relatively average on the bitterness meter. A bit of grapefruit lingers on the tongue. Medium dry finish. All together a nice sessionable IPA that I would have again. I would guess the IBUs at about 55-60.

That mountain you see when you sit on the patio and look west beyond the Columbia is Rattlesnake Mountain, namesake for the brewing company and this ale. Depending upon the time of year, the sun may set directly behind it while you savor your pint.
Just make it some other pint besides this one. Rattlesnake IPA shows a modest malty aroma with a peculiar smoked element. Hops? Not in the nose. And the flavor is no stage for the humulus plants growing in the Yakima Valley just beyond that mountain. Instead, that smokiness subverts the flavor, perhaps as a crossover element from a recent batch of smoked porter. Or is it an intentional ploy? Don't know. What I can say is that Rattlesnake is not a typical NWIPA for its timid hop profile. This one is skeletal and lacks any virtue worth touting.
