Coppery orange with a hint of red; almost, but not quite, blood orange. There's a generous amount of carbonation, as evidenced by the muffled gunshot when the crown was cracked and by the obscenely large head. The oversized cap is light orangish ecru in color and is as rocky as they come. Although my first pour generated very little lace, subsequent pours have provided a thick, crusty band at midglass.

The nose leaves no doubt as to the style; it's all hops, all the time. There's a glimmer of sweet caramel malt lurking about, but as soon as it raises its head for a look see, the hops bludgeon it into submission. With warming, pine sap-drizzled grapefruit zest has come out its shell and is beginning to dazzle me. A whiff of herby muskiness adds to the intrigue.

Sculler's IPA is delicious beer. Hop juice connoisseurs only please. While it took a few gulps to find every little nook and cranny on my taste buds, it quickly became apparent that this is one unapologetically bitter humdinger of a beer. Like the nose, malt is just supportive enough. The word balance definitely does not apply (but then I've always thought balance is a negative where IPAs are concerned).

What malt is present provides a sweet toffeeish flavor that keeps the beer from tasting like pure alcoholic grapefruit juice. There aren't a whole lot of other citrus fruits in play here (okay none) other than shredded white grapefruit peel, complete with pith and pulp. Pine juice, an accomplice, is content to ride shotgun.

Sweet caramel actually makes a minor comeback on the lengthy finish. It still gets the crap kicked out of it by the rambunctious hops though. The mouthfeel, disappointingly light for the first few ounces, has firmed up to some extent over time. It's still on the lighter end of the insanely-hopped IPA spectrum, making the beer sneakily, and dangerously, quaffable. Yeah, a bigger, stickier mouth presence would be ideal, but it's hard to find much fault with the one that has been provided.

Sculler's IPA, with its silver and black death's head label, looks like the official beer of the Oakland Raiders. What it is in actuality is a guilty pleasure. Those of you who are looking for nuance, for subtlety, for balance, have wandered into the wrong tent. This one is for those among us who are unrepentant in our love for all things hoppy. My thanks, once again, to the illustrious RoyalT.

I'm not too impressed by a lot of the beer from this brewery, but the Sculler's IPA really does stand apart. It has such a nice balance of flavor that is actually accentuated by the hinting aroma behind it all. The color is truly a ne'er perfect amber, especially behind the light. Pours clear and with a nice head of foam too. Definitely one of the better main stream IPAs from the Washington area that I can vouch for. . . Then again, this could be just the bottom of my growler of Sculler's IPA talking right about now woot woot : D

I'm thinking this is a IPA drinkers IPA. It is dry, and th Bitter goes from start to finish and lingers. The occassional IPA consumer probably will not rate as high. A solid Washington St. Beer using Wasington home grown ingredients. Whatever you do drink a second one, I think that will do it!

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a solid balance of citrus and herbal hop qualities

Attractive dark orangey amber in the wine glass with a nice long-lasting foam. Pleasantly sudsy in the mouth. Such a malty, slightly sweet flavor at the beginning of each sip. Really sharp after some sipping, which does not improve the excessive bitterness. Some flowery and piney aroma.

This has an interesting resiny taste with the browned biscuits. Not a bad IPA if you're expecting the major hop overdose, but it's too bitter to be worth the minor rewards of hoppy aromatics. Still, the hops are interesting. The body is thin and the mouthfeel is a little oily. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Pioneer Market in La Conner. Not expensive.
