This was ok. As far as barleywines go it wouldn't be my first choice. It was recommended to me by the store keeper that I was talking to while on a trip to Seattle. It was a smooth beer, the smell was great, but I would definitely prefer a Lagunitas barleywine to this one.

Very sweet and fruity to the nose. Could smell this from a few feet away even, as I was throwing the bottle away. Kind of an opague root beer color with little to no head. Just some light white splotchiness on the top. Very strong taste as expected. Very alcoholic, brandy with some wood notes. Taste like it may have spent time in some whiskey barrels. Though I mentioned it in the color, there is a sort of root beer taste to this at first. Subtle but there, interesting. Caramel and vanilla aftertaste. Minimal hop presence. Little to no carbonation. Smooth texture yet heavy body. Lingers in the mouth for quite a while. Not necessarily a bad thing. Overall it's enjoyable and I would sip on one again.

Thanks to Barleywinefeind for sending me this as an extra. 2009, 12oz bottle poured into a small snifter. A very dark caramel color. Highlights of light tan. Head isn't much to speak of. Never did much and I'm only left with a thin off white collar. No lacing to speak of either.

Nose is that of an average Barleywine. Candied malts, sweet hard candy, a hint of vanilla and some alcohol.

Taste is much like the nose. Sweet malts, caramel apple, butterscotch, hard candy.

Mouth is average for the style. Medium to light carbonation. Body is quite thin and the finish is medium long and on the wet side with some alcohol burn.

Overall I didn't expect too much from this one but wasn't too let down. This is three years old so most of the flavors have had a chance to blend and come together but it comes out just an average Barleywine in my book. Thanks again to barleywinefeind for sending me this extra. Much appreciated.

Review from 12/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark red brown with little carbonation. Sweet malty aroma. Sweet malt, dark fruits, alcohol with a malt and light hop finish. Medium bodied. Not as complex as other barleywines, but satisfactory. Will age one to see if it improves.

Pour is cherry amber in color with a finger of frothy off white head.
The aroma is dull sweetness and alcohol, i actually opened this bottle because it is higher in alcohol. I like alcohol notes. The malt notes are less impressive, and have a decent dosage of dried raw dark fruits.
The flavors are a myriad of raisins, pomegranite, and other fruits with some dry toffee, and a enough alcohol to add a balance to the sweetness.
Mouthfeel is full bodied and sticky.

2008 bottle. I like my barleywines malty, and while this is certainly a maltier English style barleywine, it’s still too hoppy for me. Mouthfeel is thin for the style. I taste sourdough bread, vinegar, raisins, and caramel. This is enjoyable, but unfortunately more sour than sweet (not in an infected way). I’ve encountered this sourness before in barleywines and it’s been quite pleasant, but here it seems off, like it’s playing a bigger role than it was cast for. Interesting, but at almost $5/12oz bottle, it ain’t interesting enough to try again.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle. 2009 vintage.

Pours a deep brown, with a hint of caramel. a very thin head, hardly noticeable.

Smell has an initial scent of pear, with strong alcohol in the nose. Subtle notes of citrus.

Taste has definite maltiness, with a hint of bitterness and citrus. Alcohol is strong in the finish, but not too boozy.

Definitely not a sessionable beer, but enjoyable. I'd like to see what a little more aging could do with it.

12oz bottle pours deep copper with thin off white head. The aroma is dark fruity sweetness to go along with a mild level of pears as well as some mild booziness. The taste seems similar with prunes and dates mixing with pears and apricots. Off in the background is a smooth mild malt sweetness. This is tasting very nice considering how young this is and the immense size of the ABV. A couple of years will round this out very nicely.

12oz bottle, vintage 2009.

Pours murky brown with a burgundy tinge when held to the light. Barely a trace of a skim coat directly after the pour as well as for the duration of the glass. A few dots of lacing also.

Aromatics lead off with toffee, caramel, Sherry, and alcohol. Grapefruit and pine start coming through with some agitation as does a fusely blast. Raisins and a hint of nougat run under.

On the thicker side of medium bodied. Chewy and tacky. The mouthfeel is a bit syrupy.

Red fruit, pine resin, grapefruit pith, and boozy alcohol start the palate. Toffee, drizzeled caramel, plump malt, and a mild vineousity follow through.

Finishes with lingering alcohol, vineous fruit, toffee, and sweet malt.

Big beer and I like it. The Sherry character in the nose is without the usual wet paper/cardboard found in aged Barleywines and the vineous finish cuts through some of the heat. Probably peaking at this point though, drink up.

2009 vintage.

A: Deep amber-chestnut, still, no retention or lace.

S: Raisins, maraschino cherries, sherry, light spice, pear, apple, brown sugar and raspberry buds.

T: Dark, caramalized raisins, Christmas cake, maraschino cherries, candied pineapple, roasted nut, brown sugar, warming alcohol (though I wouldn't guess it was this strong), balanced bitterness. Exceptional. Truly one of the best brews I've tried.

M: Well-attenuated, fairly full body, slight residual sweetness, mild carbonation.

D: Very approachable & enticing, but limited by its strength.

12 oz bottle purchased at By the Bottle, Vancouver WA, note label shows ABV as 13.2%.

Garnet amber clear body, minimal carbonation, not much more than a thin ring of head around edge of glass. Sweetish nose, very little hop aroma. The taste is very sweet up front with some floral hops on backend. Mouthfeel is very full and sticky, with decent effervescence. At this ABV I'd suggest sharing one, wicked alcohol kick. A nice interpretation, close to style, worth seeking out for all English Barleywine lovers.

from a small barleywine tasting at home including full sail old boardhead '08, scuttlebutt old #1 '08, and deschutes mirror/mirror

-really dark amber in color. white head without much retention

-alcohol and some barley malt

-taste is really in and out for me. not too alcoholly for the 12.5 abv. a good taste, but its not there for too long...fades out quick. pretty nice balance though

-smooth enough

-liked it, but again the taste needs to be around longer

Apparently, Scuttlebutt brews this big ale to different recipes annually. I drank mine without realizing that it was 13.3% ABV. I did a complete double take when I looked at the label afterwards and realized this was one of the most potent beers in Washington. The presence of alcohol was modestly detectable in the aroma. But nothing suggested 13.3%.

Old No. 1 is lush burgundy with an extreme malt-sweet aroma ripe with plum, mango, passion fruit, and most especially, maple syrup. An unexpected smokiness steps forth at first sip followed by a big wash of maple sugars and assertive, spicy bittering. There's also an enticing swampiness that integrates as an earthen spice might. The slight aroma of alcohol adds further excitement.

A hearty and excellent barleywine.

12 ounce bottle once again acquired as an extra in a trade with SuzyGreenberg, thanks for the opportunity Ben, drinking right now as the nightcap, poured into an oversized wine glass, color is a dark orangish brown, one inch bubbly off white head that did not last long at all, not much retention or lacing, smell consisted of caramel, grassy accents, dark fruit, light hops, booze, sweetness, and toffee, flavor was full of malt from the very beginning, not much different in the middle, it was the sweet kind too instead of the chewy stuff, needed more hops and bitterness in the finish, did not change much as it warmed, the toffee taste seemed stale and a bit pungent at times, not balanced, mouthfeel is sweet, tangy, slightly chewy, and boozy, medium body, needs more carbonation though, taste lasts a long time, could not finish the bottle and came up prett short, heavy stuff and too reliant on malt, needs some balance to get down easier, also a fair amount of alcohol is out in the open, also my first beer from this brewery, always up for trying new barleywines, while this was not the best interpretation of the style I have had, I am glad I tried it, worth trying
