I was glad to find this one in a grocery store since the brewery is quite local. I found this to have a very pleasant aged attitude...almost as if it had been aged in wood, which perhaps it has. Flavors are well blended without a dominant hop bitterness that others have eluded to although the mouthfeel wasn't quite right for me, a bit overly cloying and sticky...overall however a good barleywine from a local brewery, too bad it was almost 4 bucks for a 12 oz. bottle.

Murky brown-orange in color with no head retention. Smells of sweet caramel and maybe a bit of fruit. Tastes about the same. Sweet caramelly malt, metallic kind of taste. I've never had this fresh, but I think this 2009 bottle may be past it's prime.

Very sweet and fruity to the nose. Could smell this from a few feet away even, as I was throwing the bottle away. Kind of an opague root beer color with little to no head. Just some light white splotchiness on the top. Very strong taste as expected. Very alcoholic, brandy with some wood notes. Taste like it may have spent time in some whiskey barrels. Though I mentioned it in the color, there is a sort of root beer taste to this at first. Subtle but there, interesting. Caramel and vanilla aftertaste. Minimal hop presence. Little to no carbonation. Smooth texture yet heavy body. Lingers in the mouth for quite a while. Not necessarily a bad thing. Overall it's enjoyable and I would sip on one again.

Thanks to Barleywinefeind for sending me this as an extra. 2009, 12oz bottle poured into a small snifter. A very dark caramel color. Highlights of light tan. Head isn't much to speak of. Never did much and I'm only left with a thin off white collar. No lacing to speak of either.

Nose is that of an average Barleywine. Candied malts, sweet hard candy, a hint of vanilla and some alcohol.

Taste is much like the nose. Sweet malts, caramel apple, butterscotch, hard candy.

Mouth is average for the style. Medium to light carbonation. Body is quite thin and the finish is medium long and on the wet side with some alcohol burn.

Overall I didn't expect too much from this one but wasn't too let down. This is three years old so most of the flavors have had a chance to blend and come together but it comes out just an average Barleywine in my book. Thanks again to barleywinefeind for sending me this extra. Much appreciated.

Review from 12/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark red brown with little carbonation. Sweet malty aroma. Sweet malt, dark fruits, alcohol with a malt and light hop finish. Medium bodied. Not as complex as other barleywines, but satisfactory. Will age one to see if it improves.

Pour is cherry amber in color with a finger of frothy off white head.
The aroma is dull sweetness and alcohol, i actually opened this bottle because it is higher in alcohol. I like alcohol notes. The malt notes are less impressive, and have a decent dosage of dried raw dark fruits.
The flavors are a myriad of raisins, pomegranite, and other fruits with some dry toffee, and a enough alcohol to add a balance to the sweetness.
Mouthfeel is full bodied and sticky.
