Poured from a growler filled at the brewery 1/26. Drunk 1/26 & 27.
Local Grind is a wee heavy brewed with added coffee which is roasted by local roaster/coffee shop Cafe Kubal.
Pours dark brown, with a thick foamy nut-brown head that dissipates quickly with no lacing to a thin layer. The initial smell is of roasted nuts and caramel, with virtually no trace of the coffee. Mouthfeel is very light for a Scotch Ale and is more reminiscent of a porter, but the malt profile is right, with coffee overtones and a little extra bitterness. It's not as sweet as other scotch ales because of the bitterness from the coffee. The initial taste is bright with lots of carbonation with a nutty aftertaste and a light, lingering bitterness.
Overall, this beer is quite drinkable. While not a strict interpretation of the style, it is an interesting variation that doesn't beat you over the head with its differences. The coffee is not as prominent as it is in most coffee stouts and mostly adds an extra dimension.
This is only the second batch, and is only available at the brewery, but the first batch sold pretty well, so it may become a more regular brew. This is well worth checking out if you like the style and you're in town.
