IV Stout is a very dark, top fermented beer made from pale malt, roasted unmalted barley and a caramel malt.

The style was first introduced by Guinness as an extra stout version of their porter. The new stout was darker, hoppier and richer than porter, which it gradually overtook in popularity.

A bottle left over after GABF judging and given to me as a reward for my volunteer efforts. Pours a two finger brown head over a pitch liquid with no edgings when held to light. Smells potently roast, cocoa powder, grassy hops, and oatmeal creamy.

Tastes strong roast, metallic chocolate, hop grassiness that's complementary to the roast, blackberry, and lightly of oranges. Very dry from roast and high attenuation. Hits the style pretty well. Light in the mouth dry drying grassy finish. Modest carbonation and minimal lacing on the inside of the glass. No a complex beer due to the strong roast. A bit disjointed, though the flavors would like meld with a couple months of age.

A- Dark brown, opaque body, one finger brown head, nice retention time, no lacing.

S- Rich coffee, roasted malt, milk chocolate, a bit of earthy aromas, just a little bit of licorice/dark fruit. Smells solid.

F- Easy to drink and nice complexity with roasted malt, milk chocolate, a little bit of espresso and dark fruit, plenty of earthy bitterness on the backend that seems to contribute more flavour than bitterness. Very tasty with solid complexity.

M- Medium bodied, silky smooth and dangerously easy to down. The earthy bitterness on the backend provides character but is still not too bitter to get in the way of drinking the entire glass.

O- I enjoyed this more than the other stouts I've had in New Mexico and that's a fair number. Nice roastiness, dark fruit and plenty of earthy character that doesn't make it a big bitter bomb. Good stuff.
