Stopped by after a recent visit to Red Hot and Engine House #9.

This is an odd place. Slightly dingy neighborhood deli (complete with weird, no-frills eating area tucked into the back of the store) that happens to have 100+ beers for sale to go. I don't know if you can drink one of those beers while you eat your sandwich or not (probably not - didn't see any signage re: alcohol being served). Nobody was concerned with helping me look for anything. In fact the only employees I saw were behind the counter taking sandwich orders. I'd already eaten a sandwich at Red Hot, so I can't comment on the quality of the food. Good beer selection, but I didn't see much that I can't get in Spokane, and certainly nothing that would make me skip 99 Bottles in favor of this place, but if I lived in the neighborhood I'd probably check it out regularly.

A: Been here several times now. Sometimes its extremely busy, other times not. You wont find any beer wisdom here and the clients can be a little rough around the edges.

Q: Quality seemed to be good. The beers they had ranged from good a noticed Belgian and English selection. American stuff was DFH, SN, Rogue, Widmer, Fish lots of Dicks beers and other locals but nothing to wild our out of the ordinary. I did spot some RR Consecration and some Avery stuff

S: Service seemed to be average on all stops.

F: Had one sandwich there and it was delicous

I'm kind of surprised not to see more reviews of this place. This is definitely the best selection in Tacoma, and definitely reasonably priced. When I was a student, I frequented this joint for their delicious and large sandwiches (Magic Sub Makers is their name). The first legal beer I had was a DFH 90 Minute here for lunch. Great selection of NW, regional and international beers. Always surprised to see what I find there. A recent visit had 2 rows of RR Consecration and some Houblin Chouffe. Good selection of German, British and Belgian standards. Mike, the owner, is a really nice guy and has special ordered things for my friends before.

What happens when you put a 7-11, a highend beer store, and a big city deli in a blender? The MSM Deli....of course. If not for word of mouth or the crude reader board boasting their 150+ beers available you would never in a million years guess this place was such a gem. Beers ranging from Belgians, to micros, to German, to English and most points in between. The guy behind the counter apparently is a beer nut himself, as he always has an opinion on things and seems to know what you're talking about if you ask about a beer that he doesn't carry. The deli portion is a nice spot that has all types of hot sandwiches made to order and the place is always busy for lunch. The only question I have is how long some of these beers stay on the shelves, I'm thinking that the turn-over is pretty high, but some must sit for a while. But overall a must find for those in the Tacoma area, a rare beer store for our neck of the woods. Prices were very comprable to Metropolitan Market, Bottleworks, and others.

This is a surprising little store. From the outside you would believe they were any thing more then a regular old corner store. When you walk in you find out that they serve fresh made sandwiches and they have a surprisingly large selection of beer. Much of their beer selection is sold by the bottle. They have a wide selection of imports as well as local favorites. It’s a great place to get a good beer and a sandwich. The staff is friendly and the store is clean and inviting. Over all, this store was a nicely surprising find.
