Red God IPA is a big, fat, juicy IPA that is bordering on the Imperial IPA category. Dark ruby / black cherry colored and slightly cloudy topped with a thin whitish head. Hop aromas jump out at you with earthy, herbal, and fruity notes. Kind of thick and sweet up front, but grapefruity hops comes in and cleans up the stickiness leaving a decent bitterness that balances nicely. This has a thick mouthfeel for its style and moderate carbonation. The higher alcohol is barely noticed until you've had a couple. A very nice IPA that is big, but not too big to drink many pints.A Red God indeed.

A-Pours a beautiful color. An absolutely radiant crimson/amber hybrid. Head is epic. Frothy and bubbly and boy does it retain. This is a looker. Body is rather clear.

S-Nose is quite balanced. Plenty of ruby red grapefruit hops. The hops are tropical and light piney and grassy. Very stable (if not bold) maltiness. Big caramel and breads. Smells nice but was expecting a more dominant hop aroma.

T-The flavor is an upgrade! The citrus and grassy hops don't just work together, they mold into one combination of leafy-grapefruit goodness. Very bright flavor! Malt adds the perfect balance. Sweetened bread, light grain and a ton of caramel. The finish is piney and bitter but retains its bright tropical flavors as well.

M-Creamy and full bodied. Massaging carbonation. Dry and bitter. ABV is tamed quite effectively.

O/D-I have been wanting to try this forever. When I heard they were bottling it I became very excited. Very happy to have been able to destroy a bomber of this. It lived up to my rather lofty expectations. Really need to try this on-tap now.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub (2003 vintage).

This beer poured a hazy/cloudy red, chestnut color with white foam that settled and coated the inside of the glass. The smell was dominated by the fruity hops but with a good dose of malt, too. The taste was sweetly malty with fruity hops and a slight oaky bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel was smooth and hoppy with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation. This was a very smooth and easy to drink IPA, very hoppy but not "over the top" in bitterness.

Red God indeed! It's big, but it's easily my new Zoe rival. Fresh, juicy, complex, gum tingling. Fresh pineapple and citrus gives way to a beautiful caramel center, followed quickly by grapefruit and pith finish. That bitterness sends you back instantly for more of the juicy, sweet up front. Dangerous at 9% abv. Very dangerous indeed. Get this beer and drink it, if you can.

On tap at the 22nd anniversary party today.

Appearance: Pours a nice rustic red with a 2 finger off white (buttery) crown that displays good retention and lace.

Smell: Nice amount of herbal bittering hops over a very bready and neutral malt base.

Taste: Same as nose but it just comes together so much better.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, light, dry, and excellent.

Overall: This is one of the few brews out of 22 that I ordered more than once....nuff said!

Just had a couple of pints of the 2007 release. Weighs in at 8.4%abv this time around. It's the first time I've had the Red God and after reading about it for awhile, I was really looking forward to it. It did not disappoint! It's light reddish hue came covered in a light tan head that dimidhed quickly and left a light lacing. A nice, but not overwhelming aroma of hops hit me as i took a sip. Then the hops bludgeoned me over the head. What i liked best about this beer is that it didn't just try to be a strong beer, it's a strong beer that doesn't waver from it's hop-head roots. If you're looking for an all out hop attack on your taste buds, get over to the CBC and try one.

On tap, the Publick House, Brookline, MA...

Hazy deep brown orange appearance, fine-bubbled creamy head that leaves very fine coating lace on the glass. Fresh rind aromas, some cantelope, some leathery tones. Medium mouthfeel, subdued but prickly carbonation. Full and staunch hops, almost toothpaste minty and holding on well from beginning to end. Malts are mostly felt in relatively simple sugars and by the residual stickiness that is characteristic of the general style. Very nice beer here.

Another good one @ the AOBF in Boston.

Sampler cup couldn't hide the hazy ruby red color with a decent sized perfumy head that comes up tan.

Full floral hop aroma heeds only to caramel malt, but not an afterthought.

Imp. IPA all the way with sweet caramel coated toast up front giving way to the bitter fruit hops and lemon zest. Not impeded by the ABV. A good strong IPA.

Mildly carbonated with an upper medium mouthfeel.

I'd say all components are there for a session brew, but perhaps the higher ABV may cloud the senses a bit towards the end.

Served on tap at the source at a cool temperature into a (small) wine glass.

Didn't see the pour. Presentation was filled almost to the top, only scant remains of a head left. Predictably left good lacing. Color is fantastic blood red.

Aroma is likewise fantastic. A nice piney bomb, almost like bitterness straight up the nose. Nice respite from citric IPAs.

Taste is great, considering the dark color, possibly under-balanced for a red ale. Strong hop flavor. None of the cloying, sickly sweetness that damages so many big IPAs. Really like this one.

Mouthfeel is totally dominated by the hops, both with a bitter bite and slickness. Perfectly balanced, not astringent at all.

Drinkability is great. I don't know why they call this sub-8% IPA a "double" and serve it in a puny glass. Pretty lame. This one needs to be served in a nonic with a massive head for full effect. This is one to order by the pitcher and share with friends, too. Great beer.

Edit: Warning: had this on tap at Sunset in Allston and it was loaded with diacetyl, overwhelmingly reeked of butter/butterscotch. Try it at CBC if you're going to review it.
