Cambridge Brewing Co – Audacity of Hops – Belgian IPA

Bottled 8/2/13, consumed 9/27/13, 8% ABV, 22 oz. bomber to tall tulip

Cloudy light orange. 1.5 fingers of off white head with large bubbles.

Smell is buttery, sweet tropical fruit, some pine and a bit yeasty.

Hops and yeast battle for the top billing. Hops win out slightly by virtue of bitterness. Grapefruit, lemon, spice, some barnyard must, grassy herbs. Tons of flavors popping up on this one. No real sign of the ABV. Bitterness expands when this one hits the back of the tongue. There is a large hop presence but it seems to come in layers. Takes some time to find all of it. Mouthfeel is pretty wet. Not quite thick but definitely full bodied. Rather sticky on the lips. The aftertaste is lingering bitterness, hop resin, some more yeast, and pith. There is a buttery flavor that flashes here and there, sometimes rather noticeably, but it doesn’t feel like a problem to me. There are some hints of the peppery component you’d find in other Belgian pale ales. I’m really enjoying the complex combinations that are presenting themselves. I should not have gone so long between bottles of this one.

This falls right in my wheelhouse with the marriage of IPA and Belgian flavors. I thought it was damn good. I’d have to say that Audacity is to Belgian/white IPAs what Stone SSR is to black IPAs for me. It pushes out the limits of what I thought the style could hold and sets a high mark for others to beat.

Poured from a 4 pint growler, the day after buying, so as fresh as you can get.

Appearance: Slightly hazy dark golden, head dissipates, light lacing all the way down.

Smell: Lovely light fragrance. Complex.

Taste: Hoppy, does not come across as a classic Belgian. More like a golden ale.

Mouthfeel: Nice carbonation. Rich feel on the front and the hops dominate.

Overall: Rich flavors for a Belgian. I preferred to the Delerium Tremens I drank previously. Very easy to drink, pairs with all kinds of pub style food easily.

On tap at the brew pub.

Lots of classic hop aroma and flavor, citrus and pine resin. Good caramel malt presence and solid bitterness.
Noticeable alcohol, but a good warmth. Some interesting ester character maybe?

A great IIPA, I'm glad they are brewing it again!

I had this years ago and remember more Belgian yeast character than I taste now. Perhaps the recipe changed, or just my palate...

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange with a decent transparency about it. Carbonation could be seen rising to fill a quickly dissipating one finger white foamy head. Lacing is bubbly/foamy. The smell takes on semi-sweet qualities from some citrus, peaches, light grass. Semi-bitter light citrus rind and grassy hops. The taste was moderately sweet with a decent balance from the citrus, peach and grassiness. Definitely a dry floral/grassy aftertaste. Quick dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with a decent sessionability to it. Carbonation feels fairly low. Overall, initially, I thought this was a Belgian IPA, well, how about that, it’s more of an imperial IPA. Still, I’d have again, good stuff.

Beautiful color and equally beautiful bouquet hides the spice that I cannot put my finger on. I had high hopes for this beer (even though it is brewed in Massachusetts), but the unknown slice kills it for me. Many will love this beer, but I wouldn't buy again.

A: slight haze; medium gold in color; <1 finger white head that receded to a thin collar; nice lacing; a lot of bubbles rising;

S: floral hops;

T: floral hops that cross slightly over into soapy in the middle; virtually no bitterness;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O; not something I would choose again;
