look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: pours a dark brown color with a 1/2" head that slowly falls.

Smell: belgian yeast and some earthy bitterness rise from the glass.

Taste: roasted malts, bready belgian yeast, dark fruits, chocolate, and an earthy bitterness are the main flavors.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp throughout with some dryness late. The yeast flavor lingers long into aftertaste.

Overall: a very enjoyable beer that isn't as hop forward as some other SN beers. Nice version worth seeking out.

A: A thick, viscose dark cola pour yields a monstrous 3+ inch dark khaki, dense foam head. The coloring is midnight black in the vessel with a moderatedly paced rise of effervesce creeping up along the glass walls. The head decays to a soapy appearence, with large cavenous voids and pockets along the sides of the glass . Head potential is lasting with tons of soapy foam deposits sticking well behind of generous coverage.

S: The nose yields a quick flash of sweet, rich chocolate, soil and tree bark earthiness, dried cola all of moderate strength.

T: The flavor was rich with a hearthy roastiness, softly charred nature, dark, moderately bitter with some doughy yeastiness. Bittering earthiness, cola, dried dark fruit of dates, earthy smoked vegetative and tobacco, with some lightly smoked pine wood. Bittering anise on the finish, burnt pine needles, with some lemony-caraway spicing and a light background of fruitiness.

M: Mouthful was doughy, chewy, full bodied with a great viscosity that was lightly carbonated. Bittering warmth on the inner cheeks.

O: Overall some good doughy yeast quality meets an earthy bitterness and roasty appeal to give this a woodsy, old camp feel. Smooth drinking, dark, roasty flavor that has its moments.

12oz Bottle from Wegmans Dewitt NY for $3

Appearance - Dark brown colour with a large size frothy light brown head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, hops

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and vanilla. There is also some hops, yeast, and a bit of a roasted bitterness.

Overall - Not sure if there were some fruity notes in this beer at some point, perhaps the age effected that. Still an interesting and tasty beer. Not something I'd buy multiples of, but well worth a try.

From the 2013 batch 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on November 14, 2013.

It is a very nice looking beer with its dark brown to nearly black pour and lingering, tan head. The look is worth very high marks.

The aroma is mainly malty with an apparent earthy hop note, licorice, and a hint of spice.

The body is medium to full.

The taste tends to have a little more character than the nose but the dark malts are forward and the hops are playing up the rear but lingering a moment. A slight bite that feels bigger than 7.7% ABV.

Pours black with a large head.
Nose shows roasted malt, cocoa, toast, caramel, resinous pine and floral hops.
Similar flavours, quite a focus on the roasted malt with more coca and caramel. Some pine again along with resinous hops.
Too much carbonation.

A-Pours near black with a thin, tan head. Long lacing and mild light penetration of the body.

S-Nelson Sauvin hops are my absolute favorite and Sorachi Ace are up there too. I get both in the nose. The hops, specifically the Sorachi give me a sort of Piña Colada aroma and flavor. The Nelson hops could sand to be a bit more lively here unfortunately. I also get small whiffs of Beligan yeast and some solid coffee and chocolate.

T-The hops used really match the roast and dark malts well. The Nelson hops come out more here with a must, white grape flavor and some herby citrus combos. The lemongrass of the Sorachi hops also pop up too. A whispy Belgian yeast strain is enveloped by the roast and lig chocolate.

M-Medium body. Lighter than it looks. Booze is hidden. Not violently bitter but has a solid bittering factor.

O/D-Here I am thinking this would be my least favorite. Turns put it was my favorite. The Nelson Sauvin combined with the Sorachi Ace is magnificent. I also like how this brew isn't too heavy of the Belgian aspect. If only this was a normal IPA and not a Black one, then I could see greatness.
