Had this a few times and sadly my last bottle....sniffle. But maybe saved the best for last.

Popped the cork and a little foam was already registering on top of the beer waiting to be released. I grant it. Pours a slightly hazy, slightly clear amber ale with a nice dose of off-white foamy head. Good lacing.

The aroma is big caramel reminding me of a barleywine. Candied sugar, rye, pine, bread, brown sugar and a slight plastic whiff.

The taste is very rye forward on this one. Almost harsh rye but not quite. Good kick of citrus/orange and hops on the tail end of the swallow followed by salivating buds with a slightly dry (and more rye) finish.

Overall I really enjoyed this. The barrel really gives a nice dose of booze while creating a higher rye kick. Not sure how they do it....but they do it. I've had it for about 6 months and this has really enhanced the rye and mellowed the booze which I noticed very well on the earlier, fresher brews. It has evened out to something special. Nicely done.

Bottle pour at the DTLA bottle share held at Beer Belly in Los Angeles, CA.

Thanks to erichxedge for sharing this one.

Pours a hazy orange-brown with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, rye, caramel, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but has a slightly better barrel aged presence in the aroma.

I don't see a date but believe this to be quite "fresh" since he was only added to BA a month ago.

A: Pours a beautiful deep ruby red. Tall, frothy tan head. Head fades slowly with great head retention. Pretty substantial fluffy tendrils of lacing.

S: Not a super heavy bourbon presence. Toffee and oak mainly. Loads of rye and piney hops; a great combination. Just a touch of caramel sweetness?

T: Somewhat substantial bourbon up front here with lots of toffee and caramel. Quite oaky. Lots of pine and rye again. It all combines together beautifully into a woody, hoppy, spicy conglomeration. Lots of drying oak and spicy rye in the aftertaste with some caramel overtones.

M: Medium bodied, smooth and easy drinking. Slightly dry.

O: An interesting and fairly unique brew. It reminds me a lot of Founders Doom. Maybe a regular IPA version of it. Much more subtle but balanced similarly. And balanced it is. Great combination of oak, bourbon, rye and piney hop notes. It just works.
