Hoppy New Old Beer Sunday (Week 779)! I have discovered some ancient beers that I just want to exbeeriment with & see how they have held up. This is the first.

From the Bottle: "The first in our 2014 Harvest series, this single hop IPA showcases newly developed hop 291's intense, bright, floral aromas and complimentary notes of blueberry and black pepper."; "Brewed with Yakima # 291 Hops"; "We're dedicated to whole-cone hops, and we're always on the hunt for rare and exciting hop flavors. I Pop!ped the cap & braced myself for an eruption! When none occurred, I started an extremely slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. Time had clearly been on my side as it foamed up to create two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky head with excellent retention. Color was a beauteous solid-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled like blueberries dusted with pepper! It had not lost a step! Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was like pepper-dusted blueberry Pop-Tarts! 8=O I just had Pop-Tarts the other day & while the fruit is no longer as intense as I remember as a kid, the biscuity flavor still leads the way, as in this beer, followed by the fruitiness and in this case, the pepperiness. 8=O Finish was dry with a green pepperiness that made me long for something out of the garden! Yum. YMMV.

Pours a slightly hazy, bright golden orange color with a three finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention with streaks and sheets of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down.

Dank floral hop aroma with some earthy pine resins, grass and spruce tip countered citrus/tropical fruit and pale malt. Very inviting and complex with earthy, sweet citrus and pale malt notes bouncing off of each other. Lots of melon and tropical fruit along with some juicy berries. Fresh cut grass and straw along with pineapple, mango dark berries, melon and stone fruit. Pale malt presence with bread and biscuit. The melon and dank hop really notes stand out. Nice.

Medium body with a blast of dank, earthy hops that linger over sweeter fruit notes and a pale malt backbone into a bone dry finish. Dry and bitter up front with piney hops, grass and resinous oils along with straw and spruce tip. These earthier notes are countered by strong tropical fruit sweetness with hints of citrus peel, dark berries, orange peel and juicy melon. I'm picking up honeydew and berry along with ruby red grapefruit, orange peel and mango. Faint malt backbone but just enough for balance with bread, biscuit and subtle caramel. Well rounded and excellently balance. Very easy to drink but packs a lot of flavor. ABV isn't too high but it's nicely masked with no heat whatsoever. Another solid entry in this series from Sierra Nevada.

I don't understand why this isn't tasted higher. I love this beer. I love this hop. Super bitter bite up front, piney as its going down, and sweet citrus aftertaste. Best of all worlds, this might be the perfect hop.

Review taken March 2014.

24oz brown bomber bottle that's just massive shaped in traditional SN style. Not the best label from them and not as good as the former harvest ales of a few years ago, but it's not awful. Clearly stats brewed with Yamika 291 varietal hops.

A - yellow golden with a slight hint of orange haze. Slightly off white head pours nice leaving a fantastic sticky ring of lace.

S - fruity aroma with hints of apricot and a big whiff of blueberry. Cracker like malt balances the hops with notes of fresh straw, hop spice, and floral hop notes in the back end.

T - more black pepper spice than the aroma but still shows the same fruitiness with berry like notes. Breaded cracker malt balances a terrific end shot of fresh blueberry notes. Some real freshness to this flavor with a green like character.

M - medium bodied and not quite as thick in texture as your usual SN ipa. Very drinkable and the blueberry makes for a nice flavor with the 291's doing a good job. A very balanced and easy going ipa. Fresh green hop flavors with a malt balance. Smooth mouthfeel.

O - one of the better SN releases with these new Harvest ipa's. Pretty simple but still outstanding and easy going enough anyone could enjoy. I'd buy this again.
