look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

Appearance 4.0: Poured out a translucent, coppery, light golden. Great head (1") slowly faded to a 1/4". Excellent lacing.

Smell 4.0: Gorgeous, big bouquet. Yeasty, with big hits of piney & citrusy hops. Lots of other appealing scents floating around in this brew, also.

Taste 3.75: Front is dry and features an alkaline hit of hops. Middle is slightly watery, with more of the hop bitterness. I say "hop bitterness" because that's all I can detect: no citrus, pine, etc. Finish is light and features a very nice floral hop taste. Aftertaste is short, but nice: more of the floral hops and a delicious malt flavor.

Mouthfeel 3.5: A bit "big" in the mouth for a purposefully "session" ale. Still, it is light in various levels as well. Too watery at certain points.

Overall 3.75: It says something about a brewery when they intentionally aim low and still hit one out of the park. This beer is big (almost 5%) but is wonderfully balanced and refreshing. It could have done with a bit more tartness to balance out the malt profile, IMHO. Still, this is a gourmet lawnmower beer if there ever was one. Definitely worth a purchase.

A: Poured from the bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is clear dark golden with a small whitish head on top, which leaves behind some lacing.

S: Mild nose - some cat pee, some citrusy hops and some green onions/garlic. Not my cup of tea, nose-wise.

T: Modest fruity foundation, then the hops hit: garlicky, grassy and with a touch of lemony bitterness. Lingering bitterness on the aftertaste.

M: Light to medium in heft, modest carbonation.

O: A decent Session IPA, but nothing earth-shattering.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tumbler.

A- Dull gold, just a slight haze. White head is light but holds.

S- Floral hop. Some grain, slight toast. Aromatic, but light and subtle.

T- Pine, evergreen with a floral grassy hop note. The grain shows slightly in the background.

M- Light body. Easy drink. Decent bitterness. Gives this enough flavor while pounding it.

O- Decent. I like the drinkability of these new session IPAs.

a well made ipa, everything sierra nevada does is, but its lacking compared to some of the other major players in this new session ipa game. of course, founders all day remains the standard, and if thats what these are judged against, this beer takes a mid B. its clean and light, golden brass in color, with an inch of fading white fluff. a nose of pale malt and mildly citrusy hops, everything simple, everything fresh, but no distinguishing element for me. great carbonation but a body a little larger than i need in this style, three or four of them would be fine, but six or eight would fill me up. some pleasant bitterness on the finish, but its all a bit drawn out, not crispy and snappy like others. lacks some of the refreshment factor for that reason. i do like the hop flavors though, a little understated and could possibly ramped up a little to make this one a little more memorable, but i like it well enough, especially on a hot lazy afternoon.

A- 12oz bottle poured to a pint glass with a clear, pale golden body. A creamy white head builds to about two fingers. Eventually the cap falls to a thick, frothy ring and nice pillows in the middle. Lacing starts with a thin, spotty ring but massively thick rings follow down the glass.

S- Somewhere right between Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Torpedo for me, just less pungent than those. Very similar in both the malt and hop aromas. Citrus and floral hops with a bit of cracked grains and yeast bread backing it.

T- Citrus hops are the most prevalent with a grapefruit, orange and slightly lemony feel. Zesty and juicy with floral, pine, stone fruit and spicy tones joining that. Malt feel is very similar to other SN IPAs and Pales I have had. Fresh cracked grain with just a touch of caramel and sweetness. Light yeast bread but mostly clean is the American Ale yeast.

MF- Light end bodied but the creaminess of the beer is fairly chewy which keeps it from feeling thin and watery. Carbonation at a fairly high level with that IPA crispiness that is needed. Moderate bitterness which some other "session" IPAs lack.

One thing that sets this apart from the other lower-ABV "session" IPAs I have had in the new craze is the body and bitterness. This brew delivers both as a lot of the comparable brews feel thin and less chewy. This reminds me of both Torpedo and SNPA which is never a problem and I would buy a six/twelve of this again without blinking. Balance does not mean bad in IPAs.
