Appearance: Looks like a foamy cup of coffee. Black, no sugar. Good lacing.

Smell: Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, with hints of pine and citrus.

Taste: Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, pine and citrus.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and creamy, with the expected hop bitterness in the finish.

The Verdict: Very good. A well blended black IPA with a nice blend of malts and hops. Somewhat complex and very tasty, like a hoppy cup of mocha iced coffee.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Near black, but truly a dark rich brown. Head is a light tan and drops to a small cap in short order. The typical sheets and swirls of lacing one can expect from Sierra Nevada. Ok head retention.

Smell: Roasted malts at the forefront quickly tempered by pine needle, a touch of grass and earth, and some citrus. Cocoa powder and a bit of dark chocolate with some caramelized malt sweetness. Pine jumps up a bit as it warms. Chocolate bars fused with some citrus rind. Very slightly burnt with some old coffee lingering in the back. Nicely balanced approach...surprise.

Taste: Grapefruit zest and oil coupled with some bitter pine needle. Solidly, but not assertively, roasted. Some mild burnt elements add some caramelized sweetness with a backing touch of almost char. Cocoa powder with some sweeter semi-dark chocolate. Slight bitterness runs through it all. Some nice solid roasted malts. A bit more grapefruit as it warms. Slightly earthy as well. Hops dominate a bit more than the nose would indicate, but not by much.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a moderate carbonation. Slightly slick on the initial sip, but cleans up quickly and finishes on point.

Overall: Peeking around the edges.

It's Sierra Nevada doing a take on a black IPA...errr....american black ale... It's good and worth drinking if nothing else.

a - black red body with two finger latté head that dissipates after a few minutes to a half finger head

s - smokey and herbal, like oregano

t - hoppy and coffee, chocolate notes add in later. Finish is citrus and chocolate based

m - Creamy, but moderate and not too heavy

o - Perfect blend of hops and flavor, but I would appreciate a heavier beer, but I guess that would be more of a stout than what this is. The flavor profile is outstanding.

Had while at a local grill pub with family. The first thing you'll notice is the bright hop aromas enimating from the glass. It's not clear if they used fresh hops, but the smell is comparable to SN's annual "Celebration" seasonal. Pours a deep, dark black hue that lives up to it's namesake. Little to no head present, even with a moderately aggressive pour. As for the taste...well, the smell builds up a lot of hype, but the taste is purely middle-of-the-road IPA. Fruity, piney hops and plenty of bitterness, and not much else. The deep abyssal black hue of the brew and the special roasted malts ultimately don't matter as the bitterness overpowers any semblance of a malt profile from start to finish. It's a decently thick drink, close to stout levels of creaminess, and finishes clean with nothing lingering on the palate. It is an interesting little experiment, and I want to see where they can take it, but until they find out how to keep the hop flavour and cut the over-aggressive hop bite, I'll have to pass on any future iterations of Blindfold and it's derivitives.

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A two finger mocha head was poured that slowly reduced to a puffy layer. It is a pitch black color with no vision of anything. Frothy lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Smokey, roasted coffee, earthy, bittersweet chocolate, citrus, and a little sweetness.

Taste: Ashy malts are up front, but there is toasted, chocolate, and sweetness from malts with some earthy and citrus notes in there too.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, ashy bitterness, and a bit smooth.

Overall: Nice black ale. It seems the smokey malt flavor and bitterness is a bit overpowering of the hop flavor. It still is an enjoyable beer though. Beer tasted better as it warmed too.
