Pours a wicked dark brown color, approaching black, decent sized tan head, velvety looking, good amount of lacing clings to the glass as it empties.
Smell is huge in roasted malt with an almost coffee-like presence, pine aroma is noticeable yet quite mute.
Taste is similar to the aroma with the roasty toasty malt taking the front with a burnt bitterness finish, the pine adds in another layer of bitterness that is more civilized, the body is very full and smooth, carbonation is medium-low and gives a creamy mouthfeel.

Appearance: Near black, but truly a dark rich brown. Head is a light tan and drops to a small cap in short order. The typical sheets and swirls of lacing one can expect from Sierra Nevada. Ok head retention.
Smell: Roasted malts at the forefront quickly tempered by pine needle, a touch of grass and earth, and some citrus. Cocoa powder and a bit of dark chocolate with some caramelized malt sweetness. Pine jumps up a bit as it warms. Chocolate bars fused with some citrus rind. Very slightly burnt with some old coffee lingering in the back. Nicely balanced approach...surprise.
Taste: Grapefruit zest and oil coupled with some bitter pine needle. Solidly, but not assertively, roasted. Some mild burnt elements add some caramelized sweetness with a backing touch of almost char. Cocoa powder with some sweeter semi-dark chocolate. Slight bitterness runs through it all. Some nice solid roasted malts. A bit more grapefruit as it warms. Slightly earthy as well. Hops dominate a bit more than the nose would indicate, but not by much.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with a moderate carbonation. Slightly slick on the initial sip, but cleans up quickly and finishes on point.
Overall: Peeking around the edges.
It's Sierra Nevada doing a take on a black IPA...errr....american black ale... It's good and worth drinking if nothing else.
