Got this beer by coming across the Sierra Nevada Special Variety Pack. This one featured 4 different kinds of their IPA's.

Appearance: Nice dark color like you would imagine a Black IPA would be.

Smell: This one is more on the malty side, almost smelling like a porter, but in the back you can smell the lovely balance of hops.

Taste: A great dark malty flavor pulls through tasting of coffee, and chocolate, with light smoke. It is slightly sweet, and is then finished off with a nice bitterness, and finish from the hops on the tongue.

Mouthfeel: The beer actually felt a tad bit thin to me, but with its sessionability it's not a bad thing. I just wish it was one more notch up on the thickness scale.

Overall this is a great beer, and one that I would love to have again. It's a solid brew, and one that demonstrates what makes Black IPA's so awesome. I'm a sucker for Black IPA's as it's honestly the closest that you can get to the best of both worlds.

I picked up this single 12oz brown bottle at the Jewel-Osco store in Glendale Heights, IL as part of a build-your-own six pack for $9.99, making this single bottle $1.67. No freshness date.

The beer poured a very dark brown color, but only produced a ½-finger of tan head that lasted a little over a minute. Lacing was decent.

The beer was more fruity smelling than anything else with a touch of roasted malt underneath.

This is really hoppy stuff. Big doses of pine and citrus hops dominate the bready malt and coffee flavors that are underneath.

Light bodied and very smooth despite the high carbonation.

It's an IPA, so it's supposed to be hoppy, but the dark color makes you think it would be sweet and malty as well, but it isn't. If you think you'd like a slightly coffee flavored. bitter, hoppy beer, then you'll like this. I did.

Bottle (about 6 mos old) to DFH IPA glass, huge light mocha colored head, beer is a very dark brown.
Good amount of hoppyness and roasted malt in aroma and taste.
Creamy Mouthfeel smooth finish.
A real nice Black IPA Wouldn't mind seeing this in 6 packs.

Pours a traditional cola black with some ruddiness around the edges when the light catches it right. Beautiful pillowy almond head with good retention and lacing.

Aroma starts with fresh piney hops. Touch of citrus and maybe a hint of char. Definitely hews closer to the IPA side of the style, at least aromatically.

Bitterness takes front stage, though it's a deceptive bitterness that vacillates between the bitterness of bakers chocolate/acidic dark roasts, and a citrusy juicy hop. There's some roastiness in as well, but it gets kind of rolled under the bitter notes.

Solidly carbonated, the body is nonetheless medium-full and relatively smoothe once you get past the rough bits. A pithy finish hammers home the fact that this is an adapted IPA.

Another solid beer from Sierra Nevada, who, it appears, can do near no wrong. Not my absolute favourite CDA, but solid and drinkable, and worth the 4-way IPA pack in which it came, even if the other three variations weren't already enjoyable themselves (which for the most part they are, though this is probably my favourite of the four -- yes that includes Torpedo. SUCH HERESY!)
