Rich, dark, and roasty. That was the concept Bell’s beer guru John Mallett aimed for and, true to John’s vision, Maillard’s Odyssey is exactly that. Its name honors the Maillard reaction—the “browning” of sugars and amino acids—that creates the wonderful caramelized toffee-like and roasted flavors so abundant in this beer.

Bell’s has done a lot to raise the Midwest’s craft beer bona fides. They are masters of many beer styles from their portfolio of top-notch American stouts all the way through to the alpha acid assault of their Hopslam Ale. Bell’s constantly reinvents beer styles and refines recipes with artful mastery and an oddball slant.

Bottled 5/21/14; drank 7/17/14 @ the Yarchives.

Brown/black hue.

HUGE dark tan head; strong lacing.

Chocolate milk nose with a hint of booze.

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Oats, cream & chocolate milk flavor; slight hop bite on the finish.

A slight metallic note stops this from achieving perfection. Still very good.

Reviewed from long-standing notes (Sept. 2014). Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Cigar City Brewing pint glass.

A: Very dark brown and nearly opaque – it rather looks like a glass of cola. A thick light tan head with good retention and low visible carbonation.

S: Not huge – some dark roasted malts with cacao and a bit bitter character - with some resinous hops is about it.

T: Malt forward up front – chocolate, coffee, and toffee – with a fair amount of roasted bitterness. Resin and grassy hops show up halfway through and linger into the finish.

M: Full-bodied with a sticky mouthfeel. Average carbonation sensation and the alcohol is well-hidden.

O: Pretty tasty. I think this could maybe use some more hops, but the malt bill is well-put together.

On tap @ PreFunk. Black, silky, oily. Creamy tight beige head. Looks like used motor oil. Smells and tastes like heaven. One of the best of the lot for this particular year.
