Notes/Commercial Description:
Tampa is a long way from our home base in Chico, but the guys down yonder in Florida sure can brew a great beer. Our friends at Cigar City find inspiration in the Cuban roots of their hometown, and that Latin-inspired flair is evident in Yonder Bock. This tropical take on the Maibock adds a Latin island flair to this traditional German style beer.

Enamored with the Latin roots of their Tampa home, Cigar City always tries to channel a bit of local history into their beers, e.g. the Humidor Series whose beers age on Spanish cedar as an homage to Tampa’s cigar making roots. Only five years old, this brewery deserves the fast praise that’s come its way.

12 oz can poured into a craft tumbler

A- Chestnut with some ruby hues. Tan two finger head has good retention.

S- Sweet malt tones. Caramel and molasses. Tropical notes as well. Pineapple and mango.

T- A little different from the nose. Subdued tropical notes up front. Sweet malt comes at the end, a little bit of fruit juice.

M- Medium full body. Carbonation gives a little bite. Finishes a little dry, almost spicy.

O- Another good hybrid style. Malt bill is bock, but the hop profile is definitely an IPA. A juicy tropical one. This blends well.

Poured into a pokal a rich deep bronze with a nice tightly formed sticky white head that lasted for almost the duration.Lighter aromas with some light caramel and toast, the tropical fruits were light but were noticable after it warmed.Caramel butteriness mixed with tropical fruitiness stood out most on the palate with some drying and toast in the finish,it never got overly sweet.A pretty good first try of the Beer Camp pack, different in a good way.

In a snifter, the beer was a cherry amber color. There was a thick tan head. There was a hint of lace.

Nice aroma of tropical fruit. Some sweet malt and spice.

Nice taste. Guava and papaya. Some caramel malt. Peppery.

Medium-bodied, well-balanced.

Halfway through beer camp, and this has been my favorite.

12 oz can. Pours clear light amber with a huge rocky off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet sugary malts and tropical fruit with a little alcohol.

The flavor is sweet roasty / smokey malts with a lot of fruit and a medium bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and creamy.

Overall, a nice maibock. I like the fruit addition.

I was surprised how much I liked this beer. The fruit is very subdued and the overall impression is one of smoothness and great balance. The ABV heft is very well masked and it would seem that one could quaff this for a while; until it catches up with you! Had on draft at Hunger-n-Thirst in Lancaster and it is still there (as of 18 Sept). Highly recommend!

Serving glass: Poured from can into Pint glass

Appearance: Clear copper with decent head at first that quickly recedes to a thin line.

Smell: Sweet ripe fruit, bread & toast, general spiciness. Smells like a good Maibock. Not getting much tropical notes.

Taste: Strong bread and toast backbone, with sweet, overripe fruits. The sweetness is quickly balanced by spicy and floral notes at the finish. There are some tropical notes that also rear up at the finish and linger, such as grapefruit and mango, but is fairly subdued.

Feel: Full body that is pretty smooth. Decent carbonation. Dry finish despite the sweet taste. Nice mouthfeel overall for a bigger lager.

Overall: Even though some unorthodox hopping was used, it I fairly subdued, meaning that this mostly comes across as a standard Maibock with an interesting extra layer. However, it is a damn fine Maibock.
