2014 Single Hop IPA bottled 7/9/14: Pours slightly hazy gold color with a big thick foamy 2 finger white head that was full of bubbles and faded very slowly, leaving craters in the head as it went down and very good lacing that left rings and a layer on top.

Smells of malt, lemon zest, citrus hops, light caramel, crackers, floral hops, pine cone, light spices like pepper, and earthy notes like dried hay or wood bark. The hops smell like a mix of the Sorachi Ace lemon zest and very dry piney hop leaf, with just a slight fruity sweetness mixed in the nose.

Tastes very similar to the aroma with a combo of lemon zest, citrus hops, caramel, piney hops/pine cone, dry crackers, floral hops, pepper, herbs that are almost onion-like, dry earthy notes, wheat, dried hay or wood bark. The hops give way to earthy, grainy flavors that have a lot of piney and earthy notes, and very dry brett-like qualities which seem like lemon peel shavings were used in the mash. Nutty and leafy, the herbal notes have spicy qualities like pepper, coriander or dry potpourri spices, but the flavor is like a yeast or cardboard and quite different from other Sierra Nevada IPA’s. I assume the unique taste is from the Equinox Hops, but I’m not sure if I’m liking the taste as much as I like the juicy hop flavors that come from cascade or other west coast hop varieties.

Mouthfeel is thin and slick, with a light to medium body, mild/below average carbonation and a slightly bitter finish that trails off grainy with floral hop notes like tea leaf.

It was alright overall, and had all the components of a nice IPA, however the flavor is just a little different and needs some getting used to. It was not too spicy, nor too hoppy, but this hop flavor was just good and not great to me. It’s an above average IPA but I like most of the other Harvest series a lot more than this one.

Hoppy ending of New Old Beer Sunday (Week 779)! I have discovered some ancient beers that I just want to exbeeriment with & see how they have held up. This is the fourth.

From the Bottle: "The third in our 2014 Harvest series, this single hop IPA features the newly named Equinox hop's intense fruity, herbal and cedar-like aromas."; "Brewed with Equinox Hops"; "We're devoted to whole-cone hops, and we're always on the hunt for rare and exciting hop flavors. By working directly with breeders and growers, we have access to fields of the latest hops new to brew kettles. The third in our five-bottle Harvest series is single hopped with the new Equinox varietal, highlighting its intense aromas of citrus, cedar and fruity, garden-fresh bell pepper. Drink this IPA fresh and watch for the next releases that explore diverse hopping methods: single-hop, fresh hop, wild hop, and wild hop."

I Pop!ped the cap & braced myself for an eruption! When none occurred, I started an extremely slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. Time had clearly been on my side as it foamed up to create two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with excellent retention. Color was a beauteous solid-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was REALLY earthy, very evocative of freshly-picked peppers & tomatoes from the garden! Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. Taste was quite herbaceous, earthy, spicy, unlike any AIPA in my exbeerience. This was very tasty in spite of its age. Yum. Finish was cool, spicy & dry with a lingering mintiness. Mmm.

Equinox hops work here in some instances, and against in others. Some yellow grapefruit, some soap, ours out golden with small creamy head and clumpy lacing. Aroma is light, citrusy grapefruit, taste is more of the hops and some soapiness. Similar to a pale ale with the lighter hops.

More lager taste than an ipa. Had really high hopes given the ratings I reviewed ahead of the purchase. Just doesn't seem to live up to the hype in my opinion.
