2007 Sierra Nevada India Pale Ale. Cool, I'm a big fan of their classic PA, always wanted to try this one. Here we go...
Poured from a 12 oz into an official Sierra Nevada tasting tulip. I've always liked tasting beers out of the glassware they were designed and tested for...and Sierra Nevada puts some serious scientific know-how into their R&D. Yee-haw! It fills the glass well up to the brim, a nice, fine, frothy head up top. Modest, nothing extravegant. Carbonation is on par with their other brews. Color is a crystal clear red amber.
Smell- Let this one warm a little and the bland bitterness transforms into a bouquet of pine, rose, peach and citrus. Nice. It could be hoppier.
Taste- This beer is built around a bitter early-hop backbone (as opposed to the fragrant finishing hops you expect from a lot of Cali ales). The hop bill is rich but not overly complex. I'm not getting any of the telltale grapefruit cascade, something more in the fuggle/goldings family...western variants of classic British hops. Maltiness is nice. A definite biscuit and butter with hints of pepper and a delicate citrus malt.
Mouthfeel is consistent with other Sierra Nevada brews, very well rounded, just the right amount of viscocity and carbonation, in my opinion. Drinkability is very high. This brew went down quick, and I can definitely feel a buzz.
The great thing about SN is they seem to find a way to balance California's daring stylings with a toned-down modesty that allows continued excitement to your palate without wearing out their welcome in your fridge. These are staple beers. I can't help but feel, though, that SN's unique flare is slghtly missing in this one. It just doesn't do anything special for me. It's a great version of a British IPA, but not a great representation of what this company can do.

A nice copper big with a big head. It has pine and oaky smells. You can't smell the hops in the aroma, but you can once you taste it. Great IPA for someone who isn't into IPA's and who doesn't enjoy that hoppy taste. Goes down smooth, with a pleasant aftertaste.
