Deep amber with slight haze and a frothy, three-finger head. Excellent lacing. The aroma is not as pungent as I remember from last years, but still there are plentiful grassy, piney, and peppery hops, as well as a grapefruit note from the cascade. The malt comes through in the nose as well, a nice base-malt sweetness and burnt sugar from the english caramel malt. Light fruity esters. In the flavor the hops present themselves with more force, they start off with a large bitterness bite and then very bright, spicy, citrus and pine flavor that lingers through a very noticable english caramel presence in the malt bill. There are also some very clean esters toward the finish. The finish is dry and accentuates the hop flavor, and the carbonation plays nicely with the bitterness. This one really opens up as it warms, do not serve to cold.
Overall, this is a great winter-time seasonal, very unique and has a superb hop profile that really isn't like anything else on the shelves. It is a triumph of balance, the malt give great flavor but is not to sweet, the hops are impressive but do not overwhelm, and it ends up being incredibly drinkable for the amount of flavor it produces. Hopefully available till the day I die.
