Pat-Rye-Ot is an "old meets new" take on a pale ale by brewers located all in the original 13 colonies. It features rye and apples, which were among the first ingredients used by American brewers in the colonies, alongside bold American hops—hallmarks of our modern craft beer "revolution."

June 27th, 2016 - Mu final Beercamp is the clumsy wordplay Pat-Rye-Ot, sure to give any New Englander a light headache and a bad attitude for the day. But this beer is bright and hazy, with a fine, fruity smell combining raspberry and watermelon. Light, fresh and easy to drink, the mouthfeel carries the same fruit duet down the gullet, playing off as a berry berry pale ale, and is very hale ale. (hm.)

Consumed June 18, 2016.

Pours a color that is full on amber, as opposed to being 'pale'. Big full inch of off white head on the top. I like the look, but not as a 'pale' ale. Nose indicates the 'spicy' aspect of rye peeps always trot out, this might be up to 30% of the malt bill its so rye centric in the nose (and I suspect the color as well). Apples seemed to be missing in the aroma content. Hops were there, but seemed like they were probably bittering hops.

I guess if I was looking for it, I could find apple in the taste, but its barely there. The hops seemed like standard C hop stuff with grapefruit bitterness leading the way to a rye caramel malty interior like a boat. Had a mineral/metallic kind of aspect of the bitterness beyond the usual grapefruit descriptor. For me this was more of a rye pale ale, the apple didn't seem to have a meaningful impact here. Real difficult for these guys to make a pale ale rate high in my book, given that they already make the best pale ale in the world.

Bottled 4/5/16; drank 5/15/16 @ the Yarchives.

Cloudy orange/yellow appearance.

A rough pour yielded a huge bright white head; strong, frothy lace.

Apple & mild orange citrus notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Apple & faint citrus flavors up front; dry yeast notes on the finish.

Not much going on here; decent but not memorable.

12 oz. bottle poured into tulip glass.

A- Cloudy and golden blonde in collor. The head is white and delicate, but hangs around at about a quarter inch. Delicate lacing through to the end.

S- Sweet apple, mild citrus sweetness as well. Faint light toast malt aroma.

T- Citrus comes out in flavor a bit more, dull and a little pithy. Mild apple sweetness, and some spicy rye notes.

M- Body is medium light, with a dull lingering finish of bitterness.

O- The apple addition to this creates a unique character. Pairs well with the rye, and gives this one a kick of sweetness.

This was the last of the three beers from last year's Beer Camp Pack that I bought for a friend that were ultimately given back to me from him. It was packaged on 4/5 of last year but given it's old age, it held up when I finally had a crack at this tonight. Due it it's old-style flavor, this heavily reminded me of something that I had from Yards in Philadelphia as the retro and revolutionary nature of this really shone through once it's fully warmed up, and was unlike anything that I ever had from Sierra Nevada!

Not a bad pour to this as the liquid was muted, golden, and had a fair amount of sediment floating in it as it reminded me of amber. Plenty of head to boot with one light ring of lacing left along the top of my pint glass which was reinforced by another, thicker one down in the middle. Lots of apple in the nose along with rye, pear, and some passion fruit juice to keep this light as all of those were to be found in the taste as well.

This had an old-time feel to it, down to the level of alcohol that was low enough to nearly make this sessionable. I could see why too many people weren't high on this as it nearly felt like cider but I enjoyed the old-school feel of it and array of flavors not normally found in brews of this style. Given that the first part of this brew's nomenclature was similar to mine and the revolutionary origins of this, I couldn't help but feel a smile on my face as I sipped it. Worth a go once for something anachronistic and different, though this would hardly be considered revolutionary in this day and age. A worthy addition to last year's pack!

12 oz. Bottle

Pours a nice yellowish color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice small off-white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with some rye. The taste is pretty nice hoppy, malty, rye. Medium body. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

Bottle: Poured a slightly hazy blonde color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light spicy rye malt notes with subtle apple notes and some citrusy hops notes. Taste is a mix mostly dominated by cereal and spicy rye notes with faint apple notes and some citrusy hops notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Not bad but not sure that I could fully taste all of the ingredients and apple notes were quite faint.
