My first barleywine! 12 oz bottle, superfresh 2014 edition
Appearance - What a fantastic looking beer. Hazy dark orange, superb rocky head retention, lots of sticky lacing.
Smell - Loads of sweet, floral, piney hops. Mild sweet caramel malt.
Feel/Taste - Silky smooth, sticky full body feel. Light carb carries the flavor well. Flavor is massive hops front and center with a piney, floral, citrusy attack. The malts catch up shortly after with a sweet but very well balanced earthy caramel note, but the hops catch back up on the finish in a big way and dominate with some assertive lingering bitterness and flavor.
Overall - Huge flavor, huge beer. The hop bite on the finish is a little too assertive for my tastes... but the malt balance is impeccable. I worried it was going to be too sweet, but it's just right and not cloying at all. Maybe the most amazing thing of all, the big ABV is nowhere to be found. A big, impressive brew.
