Bottled 2 July 2012. Tasted 14 August 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours a very clear medium golden orange color. One finger of whitish head, relaxing fairly quickly to a thin cap, and leaving some nice little patches of lacing.

Smell is warm, malty, and crisp. "Buttery" comes to mind. Nice light piney-resiny hops (like those freshly grown, light-green spring needles) overlay that and add a nice bundle of variety to the basket.

Taste is a pleasant, crisp balance of malts and mildly bitter hops. This beer is definitely not over-hopped. Perhaps a little under-hopped, even for my tastes. But mellow, smooth, and tasty. Light grainy malts, some herbal hops. But pretty tasty.

Light-bodied, a little low on the carbonation. Finish is fairly dry. Good enough.

I can see why so many people point to this as an intro craft beer. It has lots of the elements of more extreme beers, but all in moderation and gently executed. A very restrained beer, and that's what makes it so good. I was prepared to be underwhelmed, but I wasn't.

A-Deep orange/amber body. Bright burnt orange when held to light. Off-white head with brown yeast swirled in is two-finger thick. Cascading lace. Near perfect, head could be thicker and/or last longer. Throw some glossy edging in there as well and the brew's appearance would be impeccable.

S-Pine, pine, pine! Caramel malt. Sweet. Musty. A natural funk that is acceptable in drink & food. Funky brown sugar. Citrusy. Orange upfront then lemons and limes follow.

T-Pine. Caramel malt. Bread. Citrus. Lemons and limes steal the show this time with orange supporting. Fresh hops. Some of the freshest you'll have in a beer. These hops bleed pine into the brew.

M-Medium body. The body tips towards a fluid feel rather than a chewy swish. Medium carbonation. The hops are of a medium spiced-pepper feel. The finish is a perfect bitter pine sensation.

O-Most likely the best pale ale around. Has been for decades. A pale ale explosion should occur in craft brewing so we can have super-multitudes to choose from like IPAs. But if not, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale will continue to do just fine.

Bottled beer served in a glass.

Appearance -
Golden/amber, hazy, with a fine suspended sediment. Very little effervescence. Moderate head, with moderate longevity.

Smell -
Fruity and refreshing aromas of pine, citrus, banana and honey.

Taste -
Overall a very bitter and hoppy beer. Sips reveal citrus and banana notes, with a dominant grapefruit flavour. Banana cake flavours become more prominent when swallowed. Finishes with a bitter, cut grass after-taste.

Mouthfeel -
A beer that feels clean and as light as air. The light carbonation provides a slight numbing tingle. A refreshing beer that goes down easily.

Overall -
A refreshing and fruity beer; an APA which ventures towards IPA territory being hop-rich. Full of flavour with a pleasant albeit slightly weak aroma, and plenty of complexity to enjoy. The bitter, grassy after-taste can linger and be a touch overpowering at times; it's best to let this one warm a bit to balance the flavours a bit more. One that's definitely worth a try.
