Poured from 12oz bottle into Unibroue tulip.

Appearance: Pours a translucent copper color with about a finger to a finger and a half of white head that stays around and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: Cascade hops front and center on this one, A nice piney/citriusy smell with a bit of a bready malt backbone.

Taste: Very hop forward, with some nice piney and citruisy notes in there. Middle of the tongue you get that great bready malt backbone that balances the hop bitterness perfectly. At the back you get a bit more hop bitterness with a nice dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Nice medium to light body. Crisp and refreshing, the perfect beer for a nice hot day.

Overall: This is the beer that got me into craft, it's my go to beer, when there's nothing else better, or don't know what to get. A very balanced APA, and a perfect beer to represent the style.

Excellent hop aroma. On the citrusy side, with some pine. Clear, with a golden color and a decent golden-white head.

Hop bite at entry, rounds to maltiness in the mid-palate, and ends sweet on the swallow. Hoppy bitter aftertaste. More of a hoppy snap to it than I remembered -- I'm kind of surprised! Bite is complemented by nice aggressive carbonation. Excellent beer, eminently drinkable.

From a bottle. A re-review after a few years without having one.

Appearance: Nice dull gold with a white head.

Nose: Very floral pine notes with sweet candied lemons and caramel.

Taste: Very clean and straightforward flavors. Crisp juicy citrus first with perfectly balanced malts. The finish is floral and sweet.

Mouthfeel: Nice, but I'd like a bit more body.

Overall: It's a classic and something you can always rely on.

Pours a nice deep honey color with very thick and lasting head. High carbonation is present at first but dissipates fairly quickly. Nice smooth taste with a light hint of apple. Ends with slightly bitter taste on tongue and back of throat. Very good and high drinkability.

Reviewed from the can almost 10 years after my first review of this beer on BA...how the craft beer world has changed in that timeframe!

Pour - familiar amber golden appearance with very rich, thick white head on top that settles very nicely. Great looking pour coming out of the can, with the head leaving some lacing after the first sip. Looks like it came straight from the tap.

Aroma - floral and citrusy notes hit the nose right away. I've had so many bottles and pints of this pale ale that its like an old familiar friend. Love the slight hints of pine and light malty sweetness.

Taste - that first sip brings back lots of memories. Who hasn't had one of these during a great night out or at a great BBQ or party? Balanced malts and hops with a zippy, lemony zing and some bitterness that isn't too overpowering. A nice floral flavor with a solid malt backbone. An all around great beer for any occasion.

Overall - A time tested recipe that's hard to dismiss. Great all around flavor profile with the right amount of hops and malts to appeal to the masses. One of several gateway craft beers that has led many folks down the road to hopheadness. We love that it's in cans and we'll certainly be pulling a lot of these out of the cooler in the months ahead!

12oz, canned on 2/15/2012.

Pours a crystal-clear light amber with a tight, half-finger head. Retention is very good, decent lacing.

The aroma is oddly yeasty, with an almost sulfur-lager character to it. Some hops, but not much.

The flavor is nice, very clean. Crusty, bready malts are balanced by a hefty bitterness for a Pale. Some hop flavor, but not nearly as much as I remember with this beer. Subtle grapefruit and Cascade character. The mouthfeel is very nice, with creamy yet spritzy medium carbonation. Can-conditioning worked out well.

This is about as fresh as I've ever had SNPA, and yet I remember the bottles I've had in the past having a more robust hop flavor. Will have to do a side by side comparison, bottle vs. can.
