I picked up a bottle of Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale a few days ago in their new fall variety pack at Krogers. I've had this beer many times, especially when I first got into craft beer, but for some reason I've never reviewed it and it's time to revisit it, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.
A- The label looks good, it's got that typical Sierra Nevada look and I would say it's somewhat classic looking, but it isn't the most eye catching. It poured a fairly clear golden color that took on more of a amber color when held to the light with over three fingers worth of fluffy white head that left some nice patchy and spotty rings of lacing behind and it died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end. This was a good looking beer, I have no complaints at all.
S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a nice mixture of citrus rind aromas, mainly orange peels with some grassy and slightly floral hops showing up in the background. Up next comes a doughy yeast aroma followed by the malts which impart a caramel, bready slightly grainy and sweet malt like aroma. This beer has a good aroma, it was nicely balanced and very true to style.
T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the hops still being the first to show up and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma, but this time all the hoppy aspects seem to show up evenly. Up next comes a light doughy yeast flavor and it's followed by the malts which impart the same malty aspect that they did in the aroma with no single aspect sticking out the most and the sweet malts seemed to be toned down to just the right amount. On the finish there's a very light amount of medium bitterness that is right on the border of being lightly bitter and it had a nice citrus rind and grassy hop like aftertaste. This was a good tasting beer, the taste was just as balanced and as true to the style as the aroma was.
M- Smooth, crisp, clean finish, on the thicker side of being light bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. This beer had a good mouthfeel that worked well with it.
Overall I thought this was a good beer and great example of a classic American Pale, even though this beer seems a little mild compare to most American Pale Ales that are on the market now it is still exactly how the style was intended to be and it had that great balance that a lot of Pale Ales seem to overlook. This beer has great drinkability, it's very smooth, crisp, clean, not filling at all and the taste does a nice job at holding my attention, I could drink more than a few of these especially on a warm summer day and I like to think of this beer as the original craft session beer. What I like the most about this beer was the balance and they drinkability, to me those were the highlights of this beer. What I liked the least about this beer was nothing, there isn't anything that I would change or that I dislike, it's really nice just the way it is. I would buy this beer again, it's usually a good option when at a bar that doesn't have a good selection, it an old reliable. I would recommend this to anyone who is getting in to craft beer or American Pale Ales, it's a must try for any craft beer lover. All in all I was happy with this beer, it's always the same and it always delivered when I want a nice and easy drinking beer. It's one of my favorite American Pale Ales in the sense that it's exactly what the style is all about and I think it's one of the better beers from Sierra Nevada, especially for their year round beers. Good job guys, I've been enjoying this beer for a while and I hope to continue to for many years to come, keep up the hard work.
