12oz. bottle poured into a regular pub pint glass.
A: Pours a pristine dark brown, with rich mahogany highlights shining through as its held to the light. A fluffy beige head, about two fingers thick, forms as you pour. The head loses a bit of its luster as the beer sits, but it leaves a wonderful amount of lacing down the glass, as well as a respectable silky cap on top.
S: Rich and lots roasted malts (as to be expected), with strong toffee notes coming through. A bit of lightly burnt caramel seeps through as well. Much to my surprise, there's a slight presence of hop bitterness underneath it all, which is a very interesting and refreshing touch to a porter. There's little-to-no trace of alcohol to be found here. This smells more like a dessert than a beer—not that it's anything to complain about.
T: Very full-flavored and malty with tons of toffee, caramel, and roasted black coffee notes that just dominate your palate. It starts out with a wave of candy-like flavor that actually takes me back to my childhood, stealing toffee and caramel sweets from my parents. Immediately following is a rush of roasted coffee that reminds me that I'm a grown man, drinking a beer, and not having dessert. There's a little tingle of the alcohol on the back of my tongue as it makes its way down, as well as a short-lived appearance of cascade hops.
M: This one packs a moderately full body with a bit of creaminess that makes this one really easy to drink. I was hoping for a bit more from this one in the texture department because it does feel a bit fizzy at time, but it's by no means disappointing or off-putting; it's enjoyable, but not as noteworthy as I was expecting.
O: Sierra Nevada Porter packs a lot of complexity and some really great flavors. At only 5.6% ABV, it makes this brew VERY sessionable. This is a go-to Porter for fans of the style and newcomers alike. Definitely going to be picking up a six-pack of this again in the future.
