Pours a dark brown with a stable head. Close to perfect, but the head is a little too fizzy. While it maintains most of the way down the glass, it isn't at all creamy and, outside of strict aesthetics, adds little to the beer. Beautiful rich color.
Some roasted malts on the nose mixed with mild hops.
Taste is much of the same. The initial taste is chocolate and it warms up to a mellow dark malt. The malts marry well with the hops. As opposed to something like 3Floyd's Black Sun Stout, SN Porter seems to want to call your attention to the hops, but knows it's still a dark beer. Excellent balance. Intense dark sesame occassionally overpowers the brew.
There's a little too much carbonation to this beer. The body is medium to medium-light (reminding us, again, this beer is not exclusively devoted to malts) but it seems like a harsh air fills the rest of the space. It's, at times, unpleasant. Manageable.
I could (and will) drink this often. It needs more body. That's all it needs. It is a porter, I know, but something like what Rogue does with Shakespeare Stout would be great here; just a hint more body, still medium, and no fizz. The mouthfeel is distracting, but well worth it. This is a great beer.
