Poured from a 12 oz. bottle (the last of my six pack) into a Bloomington Brewing Company stange glass. It pours a deep ruby amber that can only be seen held up to a light. Also pours a slight head which sticks around for a bit.

The smell is just like the description on the bottle neck: earthy hops up front, and then a nice roasted maltiness on the back end. It actually works out really well, and smells wonderful together although you might think that hops would be a bad thing in a beer this dark.

It tastes delightful. There are notes of chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, and herbal hops. A hoppy stout might not be to everyone's taste, but I think this beer is just delightful. The ABV is a welcome sight too, as I doubt you could get this much flavor in a lighter beer.

This is my third of these tonight, and it has been absolutely great. This beer is a gem. If you are looking for a beer that is easy on the alcohol but doesn't compromise on flavor this beer is a great fit. The value is unbeatable as well.

A: 5 - Looks like a nice, black stout :) About a finger of head, didn't retain.

S: 4.3 - Very malty on the nose with some chocolate notes. There is also a very faint hop presence on the nose. A wonderful smelling beer!

T: 4.25 - I, to my surprise, really pick up on the hops. It's a very nice touch! I pick up a little more on some dark chocolate as well. A hint of coffee as well as malt. Tasty!

M: 3.75 - Again, not the smoothest beer I've ever had though still highly drinkable. Medium body.

O: 4.32 - Overall a very nice stout! For personal preference, I could use a little less of the hop presence, but it's still a great old school stout.

Poured into snifter glass.

Color: pitch black with translucence at the edges. A half inch shade of white head built while pouring. Remained for a couple minutes. Minimal lacings around the glass.

Smell: instantly black coffee, char, and sweet malt.

Taste: predominately cocoa flavored coffee, notes of char and sweet malt throughout the entire tasting. Hops very notable but doesn't explode in your mouth. Maybe a subtle cola taste at the finish. I appreciate how subtle it is as it's a trait I do not look for.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Not super thick like an imperial stout but has that feel that almost requires a "knife and fork" to drink.

Overall: solid beer. Distributed everywhere and taste excellent. I don't know what American stout would beat this.

A. Aggressive poor 1 ¾ inch tan head that dissipates to ½ inch. Good carbonation. Color is brownish/black, very little light getting through.
S. Roasted malt, coffee, cola.
T. Smooth creamy, chocolate, coffee, figs, raisins, sweet. After taste is a little soy sauce and coffee.
M. Light syrup.
O. One of the best stouts I’ve ever had. I didn’t believe the hype at first but yes it is that good. Get some NOW. Taste like a RIS little brother. Light buzz for 5.8%. If you want to drink a beer that taste of an imperial stout but you don’t want to get drunk. This is for you.
