Serving: Bottle poured into footed pilsner
Served: 15 July 2013
Appearance: Crystal clear golden yellow topped with a nice pearly-white one-and-a-half finger head that slowly dissipates, leaving slight lacing down the side. Looks just like a pilsner should. Some strings of carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass.
Smell: Smells slightly bready, but not as much as European beers of the same style. The malt sweetness is definitely noticeable, however. Some hop spiciness is detectable in the nose, but it is not as strong as several other of Sierra Nevada's offerings.
Taste: Fantastic pilsner. The Czech style is a little spicier than the German one and you can definitely tell with this beer- the hops don't beat you over the head like an imperial pilsner or other hopped-up lager (or ale), but rather provide a spicy, very bitter finish. It's really nice to see the malt and hops work in such tandem- you sip and get the malt biscuitiness, followed by a strong assertion from spicy noble hops. This beer finishes dry.
Mouthfeel: Lively carbonation provides a spritzy kick to the beer, and emphasizes the bitterness on the back end.
Overall: I am a big fan of lagers, and pilsners especially, so this beer is fantastic to me. It's a great example of how a pilsner should be- simple and easy to drink, but with a more assertive, noticeable flavor than the watered-down, weakened, mass-produced counterparts (AAL and Euro Pale Lager). I would get this again in a heartbeat, and am kind of disappointed to see that SN offers it only seasonally.
