I picked this up earlier tonight because I finally found a place near me that stocked this, and I've heard great things about this beer. Being that it was a limited release, and everything from Sierra Nevada that I've tasted was great, I eagerly anticipated this. Amazingly, this beer exceeded my expectations, and it's a shame that this isn't available all year long!
This had a beautiful pour to it - much like their other offerings: A nice head, soft and durable lacing, wonderful aroma, and a radiant hue; but unlike the flagship pale ale, this is a deep amber. No matter, I took a few sips, and like their other beers, this started to grow on me, albiet subtly. There wasn't much there at first, but the pine and citrus could be felt. It's a bit buttery, but unlike the Pale Ale, it's dry hopped and it takes quite a while to really be felt in the aftertaste. No matter, this is solid all the way through and the hop balance is perfect, literally! The aftertaste is almost better than when I swish it around, and this has to be one of the few beers where I'm keeping it in my glass so I'll have some left when I finish this review. It's not floral like some of their other offerings, but the sharpness is at the right level and the best of their other beers is present here, as well.
The 5.90% ABV is just a wee bit high, but there's no need to fret. Those who love Sierra Nevada will not be disappointed by this. They've hit the nail on the head by taking the consistency, mouthfeel, balance, and hops that they've come to be known for, and combined it with a warmer, dry-hoppier, and slightly more caramelized presence to create the best beer I've had in a damn long time. Happy Anniversary to one of the pioneers in the craft beer movement - you've nearly outdone yourself this time!
