Smell, my god this brew smells great. Big malt hit in the nose first, followed closely by an undercurrent of hops. From the smell, I would have said this is a Pale Ale. But since I already paid for the beer, I'll press on.
Taste, almost husky malt flavors hit you first, quite bready. The hops are subtle, but very noticeable. Very balanced finish, a little dry as well. I know IPA's are supposed to be hop-driven, but the malt profile of this beer really shines. Sweet, husky, very good flavors going on. The malts must be holding a meat puppet to the hops, because they just aren't jumping up and yelling in this brew.
Overall, I really like this beer. And it is one of the most interesting beers I've had all year. Very well balanced, delicious hop flavors. This is not a hop head's wet dream, far from it. This is a brew meant for the more discriminating hop head, one who appreciates a good malt backbone. I bought a six pack of this brew, but will now start looking for a case.
