Appearance: The pour is a fiery copper with a frothy white head that puffs up out of the rim of the glass and eventually settles at a more functional size.
Smell: A burst of pine and herbal hops stick out in the mainly malty nose. It's surprisingly true to the style for a West Coast interpretation with plenty of sweet toasted malts and bread.
Taste: Remember a second ago when I said this smelled like a classic ESB? It sure doesn't taste like one. The West Coast interpretation is alive in full force in the flavor profile. This has the traditionally rich toasted malt backbone, but it's blown away by a sharp blast of piny, herbaceous, slightly citrusy hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel: It's on the lighter end of medium-bodied and almost creamy, but there is a sticky, bitter finish.
Drinkability: I seldom taste a beer that is too bitter for its style and this is no exception, however I think this would jump from good to great if they adjusted the malts to work a bit better with the hops, even it if lessened the authenticity of the style.
