I picked this up along with the latest release of Bigfoot. I couldn't remember having ever seen it, so I figured why not? The beer isn't bad, but it's nothing special. Not much different than SNPA, yet not quite as good and downright drinkable either.
The beer pours to a light golden color with a touch of amber. Has a visible carbonation supporting an inch thick fluffy white head until receding about 5 minutes later. Leaves a nice lace in its wake.
The beer smells very good. Has a nice pale maris otter malt profile, kind of doughy with a hint of sweet caramel. There is a nice sharp floral and minty herbal hops aroma as well. Smells like the trademark citric SNPA Cascade hops but with a bit of an English flair.
The flavor has many of the same elements of the nose, and the initial taste is delicious, but it has a bit of an unpleasant doughy straw flavor in the finish, like I just ate a mouthful of prairie grass. If you've had Bell's Pale Ale and liked it, you'll probably love this, but it's just not my cup of tea (or beer, as it were). For the record, it's not really what I would typically call an ESB, as it doesn't have nearly distinctive enough of a malt profile, and the cascades just shout out "Pale Ale." Amazingly enough, at only 5.9% ABV, it also has a bit of an alcohol flavor.
The mouthfeel is alright. Fairly light and creamy with a sharp carbonation that punctuates the hops. Could definitely stand to be more drinkable. It was well worth trying, at least, but the Bigfoot I also picked up casts a huge shadow over this beer.
