A: Copper in color, excellent clarity. Aggressive pour gave two and a half fingers of slightly tan head. Head is exceptionally tight. Seriously, very creamy looking. Carbonation appears non existent. Retention is high. Lacing is absolutely stellar.
S: Woodsy, leafy hop presence. Lacking in overbearing citrus presence. Tropical aromas arise as the beer opens up. Still, this one has Sierra Nevada written all over it. Initially. As it opens, the hops really begin to shine. Huge hits of guava, spicy mango and melon erupt from the glass.
T: Big malt presence that runs the gamut in this one. Big and sticky sweet up front, the Southern Hempisphere hops definitely take a stand in the middle of the mouth. Tropical and spicy, this one is loads of mango, melon and an almost rye/caraway finish. Dry aftertaste, with only the fruity spice lingering in the aftertaste.
M: Nice. Sierra Nevada malts the hell out of their beers, so it's no surprise that this one has a pleasing body. No carbonation to get in the way. This one is medium/heavy bodied for the style.
O: I was not hot on this one when it first opened. It seemed like yet another Sierra Nevada beer, with lots of forest quality. Yeah, that's a great set of flavors, but Sierra Nevada imparts them in all their IPA's, it seems (kinda like the nutiness from New Belgium). However, as this one warmed, it became incredibly good. The incredibly aromatic and spicy New Zealand hops really worked well with the generous malting, creating and awesome boquet of flavors. If this beer could find a way to incorporate the amazingly fruity charactersitics of the hops with a more subdued malt billing, this beer would be almost perfect.
