Wanted to try #2 in Sierra Nevada's special "Harvest" Series. This is the Fresh Hop IPA made with southern hemisphere hops (2014 version). A pretty cheap bomber ($5)
A - Beautiful copper color that is vibrant and beckoning. Large off-white head with light lacing. Slightly cloudy but just makes the color brighter and is to be expected from a dry hopped IPA.
S - Bold hop nose with a tropical fruit freshness and floral tones. There are also some grassy, herbal, and citrus tones but mostly the tropical (almost pineapple) smell. Not really any pine and only a slight hint of malt/caramel from the grain bill.
T - Has all the hops from the smell with plenty of the typical New Zealand hops character which I enjoy. It's a nice change from your typical full citrus and pine NW IPAs. Light complimenting grain/caramel flavor but the fresh hops are heavy through out. Nice moderate bitter finish that helps to clean the palate. A good showcase for the uncommon hops.
M - Moderate mouth-feel. Has some bitterness but trys to finish clean giving it some balance even though it is hop forward. Higher carbonation giving a moderate beer a lighter feel.
Overall, a great change of pace from your typical West Coast IPA. I did enjoy this IPA but isn't the best IPA I've ever had and probably shouldn't be dedicated to their lineup but I'll try one next year and see how this years hop harvest has turned out. It's great if you don't know what the New Zealand hop character brings to the table and I'd recommend it just for that reason.
