Served from a 12 oz bottle in a weiss glass at between fridge and cellar temperature.
A - Bright gold during the initial pour with obvious haze. After swirling in all of the residual yeast that was stuck to the bottom of the bottle (and there was a ton in there, so be sure to give the remaining 1/4 of the beer a vigorous swish in the bottle), the murk set in and turned it into a muddy but vibrant amber-yellow color, pushing up an inch-thick creamy head with great staying power. Lacing is clingy and fat.
S - Everything you expect in a classic hefeweizen -- overripe bananas, light and spicy clove, hints of powdered-sugar covered Dubble Bubble gum, and a subtle but pleasant wet-cardboard yeastiness. Mmmm... The only reason it doesn't get a perfect 5 is because I like a slightly bolder and spicier nose in my hefeweizens.
T - Very lightly sweet on the tongue with some solid spiciness and tones of banana. In the middle comes the huge, wheaty graininess and yeast. The following tartness is more lemony than yeasty, which helps give it a crisp snap. The finish has some noticeable hoppiness which provides a nice dry note that begs the next sip. Well rounded.
M - Light without being watery, and gently expanding to a sea-foamy wave in the mouth. Swallow is creamy and substantial without being gassy.
D - This is a very substantial wheat beer with bold flavor and a solid body. Because of this, it suffers slightly in the refreshment aspect of drinkability. Otherwise, the people at Sierra Nevada should be patting themselves on the back for a job well done.
