Poured from a 12 oz bottle into weizen glass.
A - Cloudy, pale yellow with about 3 fingers of head. Retention is decent with a persistent cap. No lacing. A little on the light side and a little less murky than it's European brethren, but still well within it's rights as a hefeweizen.
S - Banana aromas are present to a moderate extent with some spicy clove cutting in lessening the perception of sweetness. Peppery, earthy notes are present as well leading into a faint appearance of phenols.
T - Faint banana is laced throughout the taste but never shines. Early on the taste is dominated by spice; clove, pepper, coriander, even somewhat herbaceous at times. Earth, grain, and indistinct spice lead into the finish where there's a bizarre and unpleasant moment where medicinal, sour, and herbaceous flavors come together. Lingering banana sweetness with a burst of lemony sourness wrap up the finish.
M - Light to medium bodied, smooth with low carbonation. Maybe less spritzy than other hefes but still good.
D - Kellerweis is an easy, low ABV brew to kick back with and not think to much about. In the realm of American hefeweizens it's better than most, but like them also it can't match the big boys across the ocean. The banana element is far too subdued and there's an interesting but overall unappealing spice element. A decent beer, but if not for the Sierra Nevada name, it would fall by the wayside to be forgotten.
