From Germany to the States I go from Weizen to Weizen. Side note: it is reasonably hot outside today in Queensland, Australia: 34 degrees Celsius (or 93 in Fahrenheit). Sierra Nevada are damn fine brewers, I rate them as some of the best in the world, in fact the SNNHHWHA or Sierra Nevada Northern Hemisphere Harvest Wet Hop Ale is number 15 (out of 280) on my all-time best beers reviewed list, high praise indeed. Let's hope the Sierra Nevada Kellerweis Hefeweizen does not disappoint.
Poured from a 355ml bottle into a Weizen glass.
A: I'm glad I followed the directions on the bottle on how to pour this brew as I was greeted with a fantastically cloudy body that makes it look more like a glass of banana juice than beer (also note I have a re-purposed chopstick which I use to agitate the yeast to its maximum level of yeastiness). The head is non-existent but appears to float oddly somewhere in the yeast cloud. All in all a beer that others may find unattractive however it makes me think "Yum!".
S: The aroma is a very pleasing over-ripe mashed banana with hints of clove and coriander. Quite possibly the most pungent Hefe I've ever laid my nostrils on. The yeast also adds a delightful sweetbread waft in the background... I'm starting to think I may be on to my new favourite Hefeweizen here.
T: Flavour is a bit more restrained than expected, however all is not lost - it has some decent Weizen bite to it. It's a bit different to the aroma though, muted is that over-ripe mashed banana I was looking forward to, cloves and coriander with some pepper come to the fore, along with that classic bread yeast that is oft-associated with the style. Personally I would have preferred a bit more isoamyl acetate and a bit less 4-vinyl guaiacol, or in non-brewer speak: more banana, less spice.
M: Medium bodied thanks to all that yeast, with light carbonation. Missing the creaminess of the better German Weizens.
D: It's good, not Weihenstephaner good, but remember those guys have been at it for nearly one thousand years so don't be surprised that they make a better Weizen. Stacking it up against others it definitely is near the top, I do hope that my critique of the flavour wasn't too harsh as it is actually a decent, crisp, refreshing and slightly fruity Hefeweizen and that is high praise coming from me. Price is a bit of a let-down, as with all the Sierra Nevada brews in Australia, so it really is a special treat and as I've well noted in many Weizen reviews: it is more expensive than the Weihenstephaner... Weizen for thought there.
Food match: I was eating a thin crust vegetarian pizza with this and that seemed to go down well, the palate cleansing abilities of this brew would make it a decent match with near anything really, let your imagination run wild people.
