A 350ml bottle I picked up from a local off-licence; they were selling these cheap so I thought I'd try some decent Californian beer (I'm a fan of their pale ale). Has a best-before date of 8/12/10, which is presumably why they were on sale for so little. Hopefully the quality will be unaffected as long as it's been stored properly. Bottle has the usual Sierra Nevada picture on the front. Some info about the beer is found on the label around the bottle neck.
Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass; I decanted about 2/3 of the contents then swirled the remainder to resuspend the yeast before adding it to the glass. Plenty of foam from the bottle towards the end. Colour was a translucent light golden-brown. Low carbonation, but the agitation produced a large foamy head which subsided slowly. Distinctly yeasty odour with slight sourness - some banana and spice notes.
Flavour is yeasty and somewhat sour, but refreshing. Tasty malt, but little in the way of hops. Makes you think of natural yoghurt. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, as well as lightly astringent. Rather nice.
A good hefe - one to sample now and again. Worth trying if unfiltered wheat beers appeal to you.
