Appearance: Slightly hazy light golden hue with about a two finger white head. Followed the directions on the bottle when pouring to get some of the yeast in there.

Aroma: Light clove and a bit of banana. Some esters from the yeast. Not all that aromatic but pleasing.

Taste: Pretty much watery wheat in the first half before giving the palate some clove spice and the signature banana flavor that makes this style memorable. The finish is definintely the high point of the flavor and has a nice crispness to it. The cloves linger in the aftertaste. One dimensional but refreshing all the same.

Mouthfeel: Between thin and medium in body with good effervescence. A bit prickly because of the spice but highly drinkable and even sessionable if you like the style.

Final Thoughts: Although Kellerweis won't blow your palate away with flavor, it is still a good beer to enjoy on a hot summer day or as an aperitif. Yet another well done beer by Sierra Nevada. It's a tad pedestrian but definitely still craft. Would I drink it again? Yes, summer has only just begun.

Part of a variety 12 pack $14.99 at Safeway. Cloudy golden color, fruity floral smell, tastes of fruity banana, light mouthfeel, overall a really good refreshing beer to drink.

Poured from Bottle into Weizen glass.

Pours a cloudy golden with some touches of orange around the edges and has a soft, creamy white head that remains a nice layer atop the glass. The aroma is filled with yeast, banana, lemon zest and touches of bread. The flavor is sweet upfront with lemon and is accompanied by some banana and yeast. It has a crisp light to medium body. The aroma on this beer is phenomenal, very bubblegummy and spiced but I'd like just a touch more of that in the flavor. All in all definitely worth it to buy a case of this stuff for some fun weekend activity.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

Look: Murky burnt yellow color, orangish tint. An eggshell colored head recedes to a white film, light spots of watery lacing.

Aroma: Fruity bouquet dominated with banana notes and wheat.

Taste: A really solid wheat and grain backbone dressed up in sweetness and banana peels.

Mouthfeel: Medium in weight with some carbonation.

Overall: Really sweet and refreshing.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass

A-Liquid gold, slight flakes of copper but almost pure gold in appearance a stark white 1 inch head sits atop this fantastic looking beer.

S-It definitely smells like banana with a slight bready smell to accompany.

T-Wheat and Banana take the forefront while the clove and yeast take a nice complimentary finish, creating overall a great tasting beverage.

M-Medium body with good carbonation, nothing special.

D-A very good beer, perhaps a little too heavy on the banana side for me to be able to have more than one at a time though.

ok, i have issues. coriander is my kryptonite. being a beer fan, this is not good. i just don't know what happened. Did i have a bad experience with it? wheat beers used to be my go to brews. when i was younger, a buddy and i decided to polish off 10 capri suns each. not surprisingly, i got sick and couldn't even smell the stuff after that day. i think that's what happened to me and wheat. i got a spoiled dog in heat wheat from a bar that probably had never even sold one of those 'weird beers'. vintage. it practically made me sick and i haven't been back. well that brings me to this beer. i had a friend pick it out for me to try to recruit me back in the weiss world. very refreshing. once i got past the devil seed. i may have to switch up my summer beer from just IPA's. lovely

Pours very dark and hazy with a rich wheat coloration, slightly orange and opaque. Forms a huge 3 inch white head when poured via the instructions with poor retention and very spotty lacing on the glass.

Aroma is way light with some nice banana and spicy clove in the nose, textbook but faint. Wasn't as earthy or yeasty as the appearance would indicate, solid with very little discernable malt or grain backing.

Flavor is similar to the nose with spicy clove with a creamy banana taste to follow in the middle of the drink. The finish livens up with a kiss of orange peel and wheat twang to keep things light before drying out with toasted grain and lingering acidity.

Medium body, the darkness of the yeast keeps fooling me into thinking this would be a great deal heavier with moderate carbonation. Creamy feel over the palate.

This style along with Scottish ales were what brought me into craft beer. Sierra Nevada seems to bring their brews along in a textbook way, this beer is spot on with flavor and aroma and get's my approval for being a refreshing wheat beer with a high amount of yeast. Well developed, nothing that's off the beaten path, straight forward and pleasant.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy light orange with a small, foamy white head. Aroma of clove, banana, wheat. Typical hefe but not overly spiced. Light and a touch fruity. Flavor is sweet initially, light and fruity, with a tangy spiciness and citrus. Top notch hefe indeed.

Good banana notes. Maybe a little too high as far as carbonation goes. Filtered appearance which seems untrue to style. Appearance also isn't the most important factor to me.

Overall a good hefeweizen. Would buy again any time I was going for a good wheat beer. Perfect for warmer months.

This beer compliments the hot weather with it's sweet flavors which are light but it could just a tiny bit sweeter.

The smell along with the mouth feel is not overbearing, so that's good.

(Not the best review but I'm new, so give me a break lol)

Bottled 29 March 2011.

Pours a brownish medium yellow, pretty close to the color of unfiltered apple juice but a little lighter. Cloudy doesn't begin to describe it; despite being rather light in color, it's completely opaque. Fluffy white head that recedes rather quickly, leaving a bit of lacing.

Holy fruity yeast smell! Piles of almost-ripe bananas, a nice crispness. Not much spice, or anything else, really. Smells good, but I find it to be rather one-dimensional.

Taste has much more going on than the smell. Waves of mature wheat, under-ripe bananas, and a crisp almost-tart citrus flavor. Seems to fade as I make my way through the glass.

Mouthfeel is quite nice - light but creamy, with moderate carbonation. Finishes crisp and dry, but with an odd watery feeling lasting in the mouth.

A good beer, decently tasty with good complexity. Feels a tad light, and most of the glass doesn't stand up as well as the first few sips do.

A - Very pale straw colour clouded by plentiful yeast sediment. A small, head fades to a ring quickly leaving minimal lacing.

S - Yeast, dried banana chips and ...rubber?

T - Banana, bread, clove, pear, lemon juice.

M - Moderate body, quite high in carbonation.

O - An OK hefe. I am not sure how fresh mine was, having been imported to Australia but judging on this bottle I could not say it is anywhere near the realm of top shelf hefes like the Weihenstephaner.

Hazy golden color with a two finger head with medium retention.
Nice aroma of wheat and floral hops, more like a regular Keller, but once the bottom yeast is poured you get some bananas and cloves. Likely not that fresh.
Refreshing taste of oranges, wheat and bananas. Notes of yeast and spices. Dry and astringent aftertaste.
Light body with good carbonation and a mild acid feeling.
Very pleasant beer, revealed more citric than average and not overly sweet which enhanced its drinkability.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A - Very cloudy yellowish orange with about 2 fingers of foamy white head that stuck around a little while. Good amount of carbonation bubbles streaming up.

S - Very solid hefe smell. Bananas, cloves, and some peppery spices.

T - Very similar to the nose. Banana up front with the cloves and spicy pepper on the back end.

M - Fairly creamy and light with a good amount of carbonation. Heavy enough that you probably wouldn't want to session this.

O - A solid hefeweizen. Sierra Nevada does some good work and this is no exception.

Draft at SN tasting at Olives.

Poured cloudy orange color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly diminished with good lacing. Moderate wheat, citrus and yeast aroma. Medium body with smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium smooth sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration.

This is a good session beer.

Appearance: Pale lemon color. Definitely unfiltered, but not as cloudy as many representations of the hefeweizen style.

Smell: Pale wheat malt, mild citrus, slight banana.

Taste: Wheat malt up front, but not a lot of yeast flavor. Banana is in the background, but not nearly as strong as in many German hefeweizens. Citrus, especially lemon, really comes through on the finish, leaving a somewhat odd aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Relatively creamy and smooth, but not as rich of a body as I'd have liked to find.

Drinkability: I can see this being quite refreshing on a hot summer afternoon.

Notes: As a fan of hefeweizens, I had been looking forward to trying Sierra Nevada's interpretation of this unfiltered wheat style, and I must admit I'm a little disappointed. It's certainly a decent wheat beer, but doesn't hold up to German hefeweizens, or to the best American takes on the style (New Glarus Dancing Man and Crack'd Wheat, I'm looking at you). However, that is very stiff competition. If I hadn't had so many geat hefeweizens before, I think I'd appreciate Kellerweis a lot more.

Part of my complaint is the lemon flavor I get from this beer, a characteristic I'm learning I don't care for in beer. I know that gives me a biased opinion, but the lemon just really turns me off. Still, it seems like I'm missing something here; i'll have to revisit this when the weather warms. For now, I'd must rather reach for a different example of Sierra Nevada's fine year-round lineup, such as their porter or pale ale.

I had this years ago and remember loving it. This time around it was just ok. Has the wheat-y, lemony notes, but missing the huge banana flavors I remember. Still a solid, refreshing beer but not the world class brew I remember it as. Will try again, perhaps an off bottle

Reviewed 11/26/2009 (bottle):

Pours a cloudy pale orange-yellow color body, with a big rocky foamy white head, somewhat lasting. Strong aroma of banana and some clove. Strong spiciness when inhaled deeply. Very fruity too. Light taste, some sweetness that tempers towards the end. Enticing, want to drink more. Very light, almost watery. Somewhat refreshing.

12 oz bottle poured into a tasting glass. pours gold with three fingers of tight and frothy white head that leaves solid lacings and has great retention. just what a great hefeweizen should be in the glass.

aroma is of medium wheat malts and a light mix of citrus and a bit of belgian-esque yeasty fruit.

taste is more of the same with a controlled character and a more distinct wheat malt character. goes down smooth with a semi-clean finish and a lightly grainy aftertaste.

mouthfeel is good. light bodied and a bit thin on the palate and on the finish.

drinkability is decent. just another hefeweizen that ends up a bit thin, but still could foster multiple rounds for the right mood.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle.

A: Pours a very cloudy orangeish gold, with a thick white head. Head fades but leaves nice lacing.

S: Bready malts, banana, and clove.

T: Lemon, banana, subtly sweet malts, bready malts, oak, and a slight taste of earthy hops.

M: Light bodied with the right amount of carbonation. Smooth and crisp goes down great.

O: A solid American interpretation of a German classic. Perfect summer beer. I could easily put 24 of these bad boys down rather easily.

Nice gold in color, with the hefeweize haze. Nice to the nose, sits well in the glass with a nice foam. Clean, crisp and dry to the finish. Therefore the mouthfeel is nice. Overall as hefeweize beer goes we feel this is one with exceptional taste, better than most out there. This is a nice sandwich beer, say turkey/ ham club and of course some dill.

Poured into an American Pint. I'm not a huge wheat fan and I wouldn't run out and buy this, but it has some merit. Yellow hazy color with light lace on the glass. Smells and Taste of cloves. I dig it at first, but gets old. Also has a slight taste of banana with a yeast finish. Lightly carbonated and somewhat smooth. Not a bad beer, just not my style.

12 oz. bottle poured into a weizen glass. Dating code on the bottle indicates that this was bottled in late February of this year. Followed the instructions on the bottle for best results. First ever hefeweizen.

Appearance: The body, full of haze and suspended yeast, was a radiant golden/orange that was totally opaque. The head, frothy and ivory, was about two and a half fingers worth of consistency and stuck around for a while, leaving spotty lacing down the side of the glass. Dead on for a hefeweizen.

Smell: Wow, this is strange. Firstly, I noticed a very distinct note of ripe bananas and some other light fruit... weird, but cool. Since this is a wheat beer, there's also a hint wheat malt in there with some herbs/spices (clove?) helping to stave off the sweetness of the fruit as well as some slightly acidic/citric notes. There's a note of bubblegum and yeast in the background. This is one of the weirdest beers I've come across, but there's a first time for everything. Smells pretty appetizing, if odd.

Taste: Wowza. Wasn't expecting this. Starts out sweet and tangy on the palate, with the taste of ripe bananas and wheat malt swirling together. Followed by some tart fruit, maybe some citric bitterness in there too; finishes with some slight spices and bitterness accentuated by more tartness. Definitely outside of my comfort zone, but totally refreshing. I can see this as a definite summer beer.

Mouthfeel: The unfiltered feel is definitely smooth and velvety in the mouth, and the beer is medium-bodied with some solid carbonation. Goes down smooth and leaves a lingering taste of everything mentioned in the above paragraph.

Overall: Maybe I'm not as credible as others to speak on this style of beer since it's my first, but this is refreshing if nothing else. I never thought I would taste bananas in a beer, but hey, there's a first time for everything. Go after this if you can find it. It's worth a try. Highly complex, but not totally sessionable. This seems more like a beer that I would have with food than on its own. As good as I thought it was, I can't say with conviction that I would go after another six pack.

Bottle poured into a weizen glass.

I was a little confused going into this beer. Without reading the fine (actually not so fine, it was pretty big) print, I assumed this would be an unfiltered lager. Not so. It's a hefe, and it really does fit the category.

A- A moderate pour after a bottle swirl left a 2-finger, off-white head taht settles to about 1/2 finger and leaves good rings. The body was a hazy, golden-yellow.

S- It had a pretty decent banana and clove aroma I'd expect from a traditional hefe. It wasn't super strong, but it's repping the traditional scents quite well. Some lemon-like qualities come through later in the drink.

T- There was a solid punch of citrus at first taste (lemon). The clove-like quality comes through a little lighter. Any banana flavor is lost in the citrus.

M- The wheat component creates the smooth, soft feel. Carbonation is solid, but effervescent not biting. There is just a touch of a bite from the citrus. Also a bit of graininess (all to the good for this style).

D- It's a good warm weather drinker and one of the better American versions of the style. Not quite up to the "authentic" German counterparts, but something I'd drink again.
