Bottle. Pours a cloudy light amber-yellow with a huge fine-bubbled head. Aroma of wheat and bananas with s touch of citrus. Wow, the taste and feel is much softer and more delicate than I expected. Malty, fruity (bananas and citrus) and a bit of cloves, with a touch of bitter at the end. Took me half the glass to pick out the flavors, and this one goes down fast and easy. This beer practically drinks itself, and I could see me consuming a 6-er of these too quickly. That would be perhaps a bit of a shame as the flavors are also worth savoring.

Pours from the 12 oz bottle a cloudy, opaque golden yellow color with a one finger head that settles into a heavy collar. Kind of hard to see what carbonation may be taking place in the haze. The aroma is floral & spice, with just a faint hint of banana and lemon. 1st sip is initially sweet & crisp, with some spicy clove, a hint of banana, and a tangy, almost citrusy aftertaste. The mouth feel is quite tingly. Drinkability is off the charts, what with the crisp, tart flavor & the relatively low abv. An excellent session beer for the hot, hazy dog days of the summer!!!

Golden yellow with two finger head using recommended pour. Straw, clove, and bubblegum dominate the smell and the taste. This is subtle yet complex for what it is, a very refined and tasty classic hefeweizen taste. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, drinkability gets a deduction from me simply because it is not a style that I go crazy for. Very solid beer though.

Pours a very cloudy orange with a giant tan foamy head. The head lasts and leaves great lacing. The smell is pretty pungent with wheat, clove, banana, and lemon. The taste is like the smell, full of clove, banana, lemon, wheat, pepper, and bread yeast. The m/f is light and refreshing with all the flavors mixing well. A real treat and a wonderful summer brew.

12oz bottle served in a weizen glass.

Hazed deep yellow color with a fluffy white head that left lots of sticky lacing. There was some nice effervescent action initially after the pour.
Smells like everything a Hefeweizen should smell like, yeast, spices and malted wheat.
Taste is spot on for the style, unlike a lot of other American version hefes which miss the mark.
Medium bodied with good level of carbonation.
Very easy to drink.

Poured 2/3 into my Dirtrag Magazine Pint glass, swirled, poured in the rest...Just as the bottle says! Pours a cloudy gold. Head stays around for a bit but laces all the way down.

Smells grainy, with a bit of banana and yeast.

Taste starts out with banana right up front, cloves, with some spice reminiscent of some strong belgian ales (think delirium). Gets a little bready in the end as well.

Has a medium mouthfeel thats almost creamy.

A solid beer from SN! I'm glad I tried this one. Definitely not expecting the flavors brought out in the beer. I guess the other hefeweizens I've had must of been pretty bland.

Was beer store perusing for summer brews this week and came across Sierra's new national offering. After reading about it the past few weeks and it's "SN's New Hit" status, I had to give it a try.

A: Clouded golden yellow with a fairly thick foamy white head that sticks aroudn the whole time and leaves strands of lacing

S: Wonderful bouquet of classic hefe banana/clove

T: Banana is prominent and is balanced by spicy clove which remains on the palate through the finish

M: Nice texture, crisp, velvety/creamy smooth

D: WOW, SN has another winner on there hands here! This one really shows off their width of expertise as it moves away from their usual rep of classic hoppy ales. Great example of the hefe style and a fantastic summer treat, go try this now!

Appearance
Light butter yellow and cloudy; good white head

Smell
Soft, pleasant aroma of freshly baked bread, slight banana and spices

Taste & Mouthfeel
So smooth and balanced; nothing over-the-top banana or clive-wise, which I'm really appreciating; wonderful silky full texture; softly balanced flavors throughout though finishes nicely with just enough tartness; pleasing bready aftertaste

Overall
Sierra Nevada nails it again. I'm not a huge fan of this style, but this beer is really appealing to me. It's light and refreshing while managing to have a lot of depth of flavor. I think this could be a bigger gateway beer for newcomers than their pale ale.

Cloudy yellow...shook last 2 oz, way turbid. Rich intense clove smell. First comes carbonation, then banana clove, very rich. No lemon, thank goodness. Drinkable, but i can see getting full. Will have to compare directly to hacker pschorr, weihenstephaner to figure out if it really is my new favorite.

Pours a semi-hazed honey color with 2 fingers of fluffed up pearl colored head. Good lacing & head retention

S: Bananas & cloves that fade a bit as this warms

T: Grassyness, banana, cloves & breadyness up front. Lemony motes, plus some juicyfruit show as this warms along with the aforementioned bananas, plus green bananas as well, cloves, & tartness. Finishes with green bananas & tartness, almost pulled a 5.0

MF: Medium bodied, low carbonation & a bit juicy

Drinks pretty easy, this is a damn authentic stab at the style. Well done Sierra Nevada!

Poured into a pint glass.

Very nice head, creamy and quite tall. Not overflowing but standing on its own. Cloudy body with a dark golden color. Aroma smells of German Wheat and yeast. Flavor is very good. Extremely smooth. Definitely compares to other Bavarian weizens. Not much bitterness. Wheat malt dominates the flavor. Great mouthfeel and drinkability is also exceptional.

Overall, this is by far the best tasting American Hefeweizen I've ever had. Big props to Sierra Nevada. I've been looking forward to this beer for a while, and it does the hype justice and more so. It's not the best hefe I've ever had, but its got to be in the top 5. Will definitely buy this again.

Finally a great American Hefe. The shallow open fermentation tanks that SN uses take this beer to another level.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a traditional hefeweizen glass.

A- Pours a hazy yellow-gold, with the unfiltered appearance that I expected. With the inverted pour, it offered a very nice off white head that stuck around as long as I was willing to observe it.

S- Right off the bat, you get the banana and spice that it advertises, altough I got more than just clove...corriander, nutmeg...I'll call it all-spice for the sake of the review. Faint scent of wheats and grains. It is an interesting and inviting aroma.

T- Refreshing! I don't know where to go with this one in terms of comparison. My preconceived notions forced me to compare this to a commercial American Hefe and that just DOESN'T do it justice. This has a sour, puckering offering to it reminiscent of a Berliner-Weisse. It is almost sour! Very tasty and perfect for this July heat.

M- This beer is on the lighter side. Nicely carbonated.

D- YES! The low ABV, the soft mouthfeel, and the refreshing taste have crowned this one the official summer brew of '09 for me. I have been fortunate to have this in stock, even in my local supermarket this summer.

Poured from Bottle into Weizen glass.

Pours a cloudy golden with some touches of orange around the edges and has a soft, creamy white head that remains a nice layer atop the glass. The aroma is filled with yeast, banana, lemon zest and touches of bread. The flavor is sweet upfront with lemon and is accompanied by some banana and yeast. It has a crisp light to medium body. The aroma on this beer is phenomenal, very bubblegummy and spiced but I'd like just a touch more of that in the flavor. All in all definitely worth it to buy a case of this stuff for some fun weekend activity.

Sierra Nevada's new offerings are very impressive. First Torpedo, which was a great DIPA, and now a really nice Hefeweizen.

Now, this isn't as good as a Paulaner, but this is a mighty fine version. Bubble gum. A little smoke. Typical hefeweizen flavors. This one is pretty easy drinking.

I thought I smelled hops on the nose, but I didn't taste hops so maybe it was my imagination.

I poured this one from a stubby 12oz brown bottle into a pilsner flute glass.

A= This ale poured a cloudy but glowing yellow gold with a 1.5" white head. The head dropped to a 1/8" cap and maintained all the way down. Lots of sheet lacing left behind on my glass.

S= Aromas of spicy clove dominate with banana and slight sulfur also present.

T= Much like the smell, with banana and clove leading the way but clove being the more dominant. Some serious wheat twang all over the start and middle of each sip. Spicy phenolic notes creep into the middle too. Finished dry with a very very faint tartness coming in to seal the deal.

MF= Lighter side of medium bodied with a very crisp carbonation level and palate cleansing feel.

D= Extremely enjoyable and highly sessionable. This is not a typical German style hefeweizen, but I like it a lot and could easily session a bunch in a night.

Been wanting to pick up some of this since it came out. Beautiful day, rooftop, Santa Monica...ahh I love summer.

A- Poured as directed, swirling the final third then pouring into glass. Looks like a beauty. Although it has that haziness to it, it is a bright apricot yellow with about a 2 1/2 inch craggy foam cap that clings to the glass as it shrinks down.

S- Subtle dusty hay yeastiness white pepper and coriander. I don't get the banana I was expecting.

T- I get a combo of subtle summer stone fruit wrapped up with some wheaty sweetness that has a touch of a bitter blip at the end before the dry finish. This is really nice.

M- Smooth, mild body with crisp carbonation.

D- Oooooh I could drink these all summer. I love this beer and summer. What a great combo... and the rooftop view in Santa Monica doesn't hurt either.

pours cloudy yellow with a orange tinge - big frothy 2+ finger head that leaves spotted lacing

smells of fresh wheat and stong banana

taste is solid - maybe not as good as the smell but good - the banana has a slight tang - very wheaty - good full flavored hefe

mouthfeel is light but feels heavier some how with plenty of carbonation that leaves a nice dry finish

drinkability is great - a full flavored lower abv% beer that you can enjoy year round

Kellerweis pours out a rich dark golden with a generous cloudiness. Nicely voluminous white head has respectable lace/retention. The aroma is full of bready yeast that emanates cloves and banana. The initial taste is a wheatiness that is heavily cut by a thick mild clove bitterness or fruity banana puckering. Somewhat heavy wheat character and spicy/fruity yeast.

A nice traditional hefeweizen made with open fermentation in America, which I appreciate, but it not a game changer. Quality hefeweizens from Germany is a niche that is readily available and affordable already. Medium body with a forceful, smooth carbonation. A solid offering from Sierra Nevada that reinforces their image as a brewer that is continually improving itself for decades now.

12oz bottle

App: Pale yellow and completely opaque. Small even head with yellow spots from the yeast.

Smell: One of the best hefe smells ever, since I'm not the biggest banana-hef fan.

Taste: greeted by a burst of carbonation. Next comes a pair of yeasty sourness and husky wheat malt.

A lighter mouthfeel than most hefs. The thickness of the hef can sometimes be sickening.

An all around solid wheat beer

This beer pours an extremely hazy yellow-orangish color with a hefty 2-3 finger of foamy white head to it. Head retention was very good, leaving rings of lacing on the glass the whole way down. Nose is of bananas and clove up front, a strong yeast presence with some wheat detectable. Taste is very nicely blended. Spice of clove gets you up front mixing with some lemon zestiness and a touch of banana. Yeast guides the middle, though more well blended than the sharpness in the nose. Finish is of wheat, some pale malts and a touch of earthiness. On the lighter side of medium body, with moderate carbonation, the unfiltered nature makes this a thicker feel on the tongue and a sticky finish. This is a highly sessionable beer and perfect for a humid summer night.

Pours hazy golden with white head. Nose is the typical banana/clove but not terribly assertive with banana. On the palate the banana is weak as well, but plenty of herbal flavors, hops come through too, and a decent clove/spice in the mix. Wheat cracker is present. Carbonation is good and feels fuller bodied than most weissbiers.

Live review. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle purchased as a single from Warehouse Beverage on Mayfield in Cleveland yesterday. Poured into my Ommegang Witte tumbler.

A slightly hazy brown/yellow body under a white basic looking head that stuck around for a minute or two.

S Nice light wheat smell with light malt barley. Appropriate to the style but does not really inspire.

T Nice sweetness on top of the required wheat, light malt and minimal hops tastes. Nice and above average.

M Minimal to moderate, true to style. There is a nice smoothness to the feel that I appreciate as well.

D Very good, a hallmark of the style.

Notes: A very solid Hefe but nothing that inspires my imagination. Credit certainly goes to Sierra Navada for continuing to push their horizons with new styles.

Followed the directions on the Sierra Nevada insert that came with the six pack (which includes a great picture of a brewer scraping off some of the fermentation floaties in a huge open fermenting tank). You are supposed to pour 2/3 of the bottle, swirl the bottle, and pour the rest. I follow the same steps with witbiers and other beers with sediment. I found this beer had more sediment than many beers so a few rinses is required.

A- Pours a hazy gold with a nice thick white head. Completely opaque.

S- Smells of wheat and banana, almost like a nice piece of bread.

T- Wow, one of the more complex tasting Hefeweizen's I've had. Banana, wheat, some fruitiness in the finish.

M- Thick and somewhat chewy, not watery at all. I want to say that it feels "silky".

D- Very light alcohol-wise, though very flavorful! I feel as though one would not appreciate the flavors going on here after more than a couple, so I probably would not session this.

Overall, probably one of the best hefeweizen's I have had. I can see how the open fermentation makes this different than most American hefe's. I'd definitely seek this one out if you're a fan of the style, which admittedly I am not, but I really enjoyed this one.

A: Hazy golden color, some hints of orange. Not much head nor lacing.

S: Wheat, mild spice, citrus sweetness.

T: Orange, mild spice, bread, perhaps some banana (especially noticeable with any burps that you may let out while drinking this beer). Sorry for being crude, but it's true.

M: Medium body, not much carbonation to speak of.

D: A very nice wheat beer, much better than the other American offerings I've had.
